|
|
Following my move it's quite clear that my music collection has expanded far more than I realised it had. I have over 2000 records and even more than that in CDs and, to be honest, with it all laid out on the lawn I was reminded of one of those hoarders you see on TV. I fear I own far more than I can ever play now and this does not include my most of it paid for digital music collection (which I must back up soon!).
I will have to do a cull because it's now encroaching into my family's living space but my question is how does one overcome the emotional attachment of culling a collection? Has anyone done it? What criteria did you lay down? Have people backed up into a digital format and then got rid of the originals - I know that's illegal but... Or have people invested in storage space at one of those warehouses..
Strangely I don't have the same attachments to books or DVD's which I have no problem taking down to the chazza.... _________________ Records I Like - The Culture Bunker- Festive 50 Spotify Playlists |

My Dad used to be a DJ (well he still is actually) and got hundreds of promos in the post in the 70s and 80s. He had to store them in suitcases in the end in the shed. Most of them ended up on several bonfires. So that's one way to cull it! He kept the stuff he liked obviously.
I live in a bedsit so my entire collection is mothballed in the loft. It's safe and dry up there and isn't in the way. Not sure I'd be happy getting rid of a lot of it. But if I want to hear virtually any song I own I can find them on youtube/spotify or whatever. _________________ REVOLUTION PURITY LOVE SUICIDE ACCURACY

| I cull the CDs from time to time but not very successfully - usually only clearing out a few hundred promos and singles (there's still about 6000 untouched). I can't bring myself to touch vinyl even though realistically I could probably get rid of 95% and know I was never going to play it again anyway. I still harbour daft dreams of running a record shop at some time, which lies behind my inability to clear out the vinyl. |

I've always culled quite regularly ever since I started seriously collecting records. So I've never had more than 500 album or CDs in total I reckon. Pretty much all of my friends have been horrified by this behaviour!
Recently I've been culling albums where I really only love a few songs. It's so easy to listen to single tracks online, there doesn't seem much point keeping patchy albums. I have a goal of my physical collection being all killer no filler! _________________ Pin It On Badges

Me too. Been thinking about doing this myself, maybe just online to start with....
(how easy/cheap is it to get stalls at record fairs and do people still go to them?) |

The last time I did a cull - about a year ago - I checked through ebay completed listings to see what the going rates were. I did have a few quite impressive rarities, but most of my stuff didn't add up to much. Certainly not enough to make it worth the effort imo. I ended up giving away vinyl to friends and CDs to charity shops. _________________ Pin It On Badges

Thanks for the replies peeps.
I reckon we all need to get together and form the Sounds XP online record store. I will start with 495 copies of every sounds eXPerience release......
ECWID is free for 100 items. It's something I have been thinking of. _________________ Records I Like - The Culture Bunker- Festive 50 Spotify Playlists |

I reckon thats gonna happen with mine! Already gave away two crates of vinyl before I moved because they were not worth that much. _________________ Records I Like - The Culture Bunker- Festive 50 Spotify Playlists |

It's dead easy to get a stall at a fair. The little ones aren't much point for a seller unless you're doing it all the time but as a one off the big ones usually are, especially if you don't get greedy with your prices. |

More culling this weekend with the ex moving and me having to take as much as I can to my small flat. Going to sell another 500+ Records and CD's that I just don't play anymore.
I have spent the day removing loads of CD's from their jewel cases and putting into some cheap CD cases I picked up. However can anyone recommend or know any decent CD portfolio case brands or indeed any other CD storage that does not require jewel cases? And I don't mean converting to digital format. Well not just yet! _________________ Records I Like - The Culture Bunker- Festive 50 Spotify Playlists |

Where do you sell all your old stuff, Bola? Online via ebay/Amazon or to a shop? (is there one in Leigh?) |

To be honest I have no idea of what most of it is worth. Obviously the collectors stuff stays with me but the rest, some of which I haven't listened to in a decade, can go. I have most of it backed up onto FLAC but I just don't listen to that much music anymore, other than via my ipod, these days. _________________ Records I Like - The Culture Bunker- Festive 50 Spotify Playlists |

So the buyer is a dealer whom you know through a shop in Leigh?
Most 90s/00s indie is worth little but some of the C86 stuff is if it was a local band that didn't get too much exposure nationally (eg Leamington on Spa bands, etc) and most of the Sarah label stuff or similar or anything with nicely produced packaging with booklets, etc.
Having said that some LPs can be worth a few bob if they're 90s/00s and vinyl |
