The reason The Strokes have scrapped their live lp is that live lps are only any good if-

a) you have more than 2 lps to choose songs from
b) if not very many people saw you live during your bands life
or
c) if you do different versions of the songs you've already recorded...

Some good live lps

Bob Dylan "1966- Live at the Manchester Free Trade Hall"
The Velvet Underground "1969" and "Max's Kansas City"
The Who "Live At Leeds" (The extended version not the original LP)
MC5 "Kick Out The Jams" (Though this may not count seeing as how it was their first LP)
Randy Newman "Live" (But I think it's only me who likes this)

I can think of no more which proves my point...maybe "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out" but even that's not that good...

Generally agree that live LPs are rubbsih. New Order's Live At Glastonbury a promes example.

However my faves:

The Pixies Live CD that came in the limited version of "Death To The Pixies". Tops!
Mighty Lemon Drops - "All The Way" - seriously!
Front 242 - "Live Target" - Head hunt this........
Pretenders - "Isle Of View" - Amazingly and shockingly good!

My favourite live album is "Dance Craze". But even a few songs off that have been touched up in the studio.

good live albums? A tiny category. Ones that come to mind are:

Soft Boys: Live at the Portland Arms
Live at the Vortex (Wire and Johnny Moped especially)

And I suspect that that Strokes news was press hype from the git-go. Like Simon Luv says, they're a bit light on songs and they're a bit shite full stop. But it got them a few half-pages in their fanzine, err the NME. Besides, that story had bigger holes than Catweazel's underpants: Casablancas wouldn't know a decent sound if it kicked him in the bell-end - old posh twat has to be told everything.

Oooh I've not heard that Soft Boys live thing...

Is it old Soft Boys or from the reunion tour?

REM's 'New Adventures In Hi-Fi' doesn't strictly count as a live album, but most of the tracks were recorded live and it is a fine album.

The Buzzcocks' '78 Lyceum gig included in the Product box set is great, but then I'm biased as I was there. :D

Neil Diamond live - I shit you not - it's a gem. Neil - 'We're gonna do a little song now that UB40 took all the way to number one for me...' (he kind of sounds pissed off by the fact but strangely amused by it too) before breaking out into 'Red, red wine....' Just beautiful and 'Elvis live at Madison Square Garden'...when he sings Polk Salad Annie he takes me to another place.. :? Elvis  8) Huh huh...

Not really one for Live albums, although one that always makes me laugh is The Pooh Sticks' "Trademark of Quality", as it documents a rather disasterous gig in Southampton (the power even cuts out 20 minutes into the set, so it is only a one-sided LP), so it's an entertaining antidote to all the ego-inflating contractual obligation fillers that tend to dominate the genre.
