We've got some spectacular gigs coming up on Manchester starting Saturday 13/02/10 with tUnE-yArDs at the The Ruby Lounge, High Street, Manchester. Doors 7.30pm

Getting regular plays on BBC Radio these days - by the likes of Marc Riley, Tom Robinson, Gideon Coe and Lauren Laverne - Merrill Garbus's tUnE-yArDs have a new album out released on 4AD called Bird Brains and it's wonderful stuff.

Sounds XP: tUnE-YaRdS is a right bag of kooky weirdness. The work of New England’s Merrill Garbus, it’s all jarring guitars, African yodelling and clanking great drums. It sounds like it should be a horrible mess but her tribal post punk is actually terribly compelling.

DIS (on Bird Brains): in the case of tUnE-YaRdS’ Merril Garbus, the use of lo-fi is brilliantly unpredictable, and conversely becomes an artefact of music technology’s accessibility – it was recorded using only shareware programmes and a digital voice recorder.

BBC: It’s a lo-fi tale par excellence.

MusicOMH: Garbus can often disturb and surprise - and it is hard to escape the sense in which this is a very real, personal and sometimes stark portrayal of aspects of her life - which doesn't make for an album that is an easy, straightforward or relaxing listen. If you relish a challenge, and like music to brace you as much as entertain you, then this should fit the bill. Like no-one else very much, but very much herself, it is one woman's raw, open and compelling testament. 8/10

Of Tune-Yards the Observer says

"No record thrummed with as much warmth, humour and invention this year as the debut by New England native Merrill "tUnE-YaRdS" Garbus, which was assembled on her laptop from scratchy recordings. The source material might have been voguish scuffed anti-folk, African-style pop, pastoral electronica but these 13 tracks remain alive to the stink and clatter of their influences, so that the effect is of being led by the hand through a miraculous musical landscape. Garbus made the perfect guide, too, her voice by turns sweet, coaxing and thrillingly deranged"

and the Guardian says of Tune-Yards

"She's the find of the Year" see her at the Ruby Lounge this coming Saturday.

Ruby Lounge, Manchester 13/02/10
