Odd Box are delighted to have been asked to host a RoTa afternoon in October.
Odd Box @ RoTa 24th October - 4pm-8pm RoTa, Notting Hill Arts Club, 21 Notting Hill Gate London W11 3JQ
Odd Box is a new record label and we love to champion new exciting bands. We think this four band billed excels in this department - bringing together 4 bands that all scream 'you are going to love this!'. The bands range from jagged punk infused pop to sophisticated guitar pop and everything that sits inbetween and this migthy fine line up goes to show that indiepop is in rude health in 2009. Come along to hear a glimpse of the future.
The afternoon kicks off at 4pm and it's free entry all afternoon.
This quartet from Bristol released their (and our) debut single back in May 2009. So we are delighted to get the band down for a 'rare' London perfomance. The band are a heady mix of intricate jangly guitars and top notch pop songs. They played Indietracks in 2008 where they went down a storm.
"The Kick Inside make a very spikey, sophisticated pop noise" - A Layer Of Chips Blog
"Oh I love this. It’s chirpy guitar pop from the mid eighties, guitars picked at ten to the dozen, diving this way and that, twisting you in circles" - Russell's Reviews
"high quality guitar pop" - Eardrums
The Medusa Snare are ex-Manhattan Love Suiciders A.J. Miller and Rachel Barker, along with John Perry, E. Max Broady and Daniel Leach Morris: They Play fuzzed up indie pop, the album “Cinderella” was recorded last year and will be released on Squirrel Records in October. The band share a similar sonic approach to the Manhattan Love Suicides whilst adding something a little different to mix. The band have only played a handful of shows and this will be their debut London show. And they stood in at the last minute for the acoustic Manhattans show that never was at this year's indietracks as a packed train was told 'The Manhattan Love Suicides have split up'.
"Patiently riding up and down the track on the steam train on Sunday morning, eating Sherbert dibdabs and wondering if The Manhattan Love Suicides are gonna show, as we've heard rumours...then being pinned to the wall of the carriage when the entire festval squeezes in to hear the Manhattan's split announcement. Then being soothed by the surprisingly touching acoustical tunes brought to us by ex-Manhattans, The Medusa Snare as the train chuffs along with us all sardined in" - Kitten Painting
A brand new band from London - playing majestic indiepop with a sophisticated yet blistering sonic edge. This band come highly recommend and the songs on My Space suggest they're something a little special. Citing influences as diverse as Jonathan Richman, Elliot Smith and Tom Waits - they could well be at the start of something very special. Come and see them before they take off.
The band are recording their debut LP at the moment after a string of what can only be described as classic singles - from 'Smash Hits' to 'I Don't Have The Heart For This'. When the band played at Lostmusic back in March of this year - they were a revelation - a bundle of Scottish energy on stage firing out their barbed wire pop songs. With comparisons ranging through The Buzzcocks to Teenage Fanclub this quartet from 4 corners of Scotland are one of the best kept secrets in Indiepop.
"Juicy, chewy pop-kids to savour, proving that life still twitches in this indie guitar-pop business." Paul Whitelaw, The Scotsman
"Kid Canaveral’s debut single, Smash Hits, is the kind of joyous buzzsaw racket that’s so simple and so very effective you wonder why people don’t make it more often...They sound like they’re armed with the knowledge that music peaked in 1976 with the first Ramones album (although the Shop Assistants were pretty good) and consequently Smash Hits is the kind of dumb punk pop that so very few get right. Fewer still get it as right as this. Go and listen to them" - Fire Escape Talking
"What is it about Scots and indie pop? the two seem to go hand in hand. Give a Scot a guitar and he will bash out a catchy as hell song that will make you pogo about in your room for days. Edinburgh's Kid Canaveral is no exception. In other words this band have a magic touch with music. As I know you'll never hear songs this honest and worm their way into your eardrums so quick. Brilliant, Brilliant stuff that needs to be heard! This is your new favourite band!" - Vindictive Jukebox
We'll be done by 8pm - so with any luck we can scoot across to Camden to catch superb openers Kid Canaveral play a set at Bar Fly.
