Following on from Dook's admission that he shed a few manly tears at the Joanna Newson gig (and Cavey's scepticism about male blubbing), what songs make you cry?

I'll kick things off:

"The Last Time I Saw Richard" by Joni Mitchell often makes me cry - and not just a few casual tears either, but huge, shuddering sobs. So there.

Wow... amazing how I can think Joni's voice is perfect but someone else can be so averse to it... my sister's the same. I put Blue on in our old car once and she was like "if you don't turn this off I'm gonna rip the stereo out and smash it in your face..." Amazing. An old friend of mine lent me that DVD of hers and there's this clip of her doing the song Blue just alone on a piano... Mate, her voice is coming from somewhere else as Howdy said... it's almost immeasurably moving...

I don't think songs have the ability to make me cry per se. I mean I've never been walking down the road jolly as fuck and then slammed some Elliott Smith on and started wailing like a baby... However in context I've had the odd tear roll down the cheek from listening to the wrong song at the wrong time... Such as slamming on, say, The Blue Nile the day after a torrid break-up... Yeah why not make yourself feel worse mate?! The musical equivalent of chopping a rake of chillies and then taking a mighty slash without washing your hands...

This is a tricky one. Like Dooks and Westie, it's rare when I spontaneously weep to a tune. Even in the context of a certain situation it takes a truly heartbusting classic to induce reluctant man-tears from my granite-like ducts.

I do remember one point when there'd been a bereavement in the family, staring out at the rain pissing down and listening in succession to Leonard Cohen's 'Famous Blue Raincoat' and 'Sweetness Follows' by REM and having a manly bawl.

Until I realised that Famous Blue Raincoat had the same tune as a f*cking Leo Sayer song.
