I generally don't like [definite article] [plural noun] band names (there are some exceptions: The Kinks, The Sailplanes, The Replacements and of course The Smiths), but my favourite names are [definite article] [adjective] [singular noun] (where the adjective can be a noun used as an adjective eg The Wedding Present, The Velvet Underground, The Style Council). Band names that fit that pattern seem to be relatively rare. It's much more common with plural nouns. They often seem to be references (The Psychotic Reaction, The Total Drop, The National Pep).

As for bad band names, The Total Drop could have been called Aztechnique, which is possibly the worst name I've ever heard.
