You're asking the wrong person if you want only three! I'm even more of a literature geek than a music geek, but I'll try not to get all heavy and classical on you. The best modern books I've read recently would be The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Kite Runner (can't remember the author), The Timetraveller's Wife by Audrey Niffernegger and The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Hope that helps!
