For the record, new single Round The Lean-To With Grandad is out on monday, available through www.tinydog.co.uk, iTunes, and the Flipron website. The single launch party is tonight at the Spice of Life on the corner of Romily Street, Soho. Do check this band out, as they are pretty great.

Sadly, I'm going to miss their single launch 'cos I'm playing a gig in Kingston. If it wasn't so bloody far away i might have been able to do both. Are you going Tim?

The covers have always put me off (I'm the same with books...). What sort of music is it?

It's in the vein of post-Mule Tom Waits, John Fahey, or Trout Mask Replica meets Murder Ballads I guess...

Now, you see, this is one (just one) reason why I'm against too much "sounds like" reviewing. I've just downloaded a couple of Flipron tracks from the tinydog site. I like 'em, but to me they sound nothing like the references tim pinned to their tail.

That way of describing music is simply not as helpful or as transparent as people think. If Da Juice didn't make it to last night's gig, tim's (well-intentioned) refs might have caused him to miss an enjoyable experience.

I try to avoid sounds-like reviewing, but BJ did ask. You are right, you can only describe a band by what they do not who they sound like.

That said, I only knew some of there songs before last night and that's what came to mind. Last night's gig was an experience for me too.

Anyway, I can't personally hear The Velvet Underground in them either, but I don't doubt that Neil did. People take different things from what they hear.

Actually, having listened to the songs again, I can hear some Tom Waits in there - especially in the Casino Rustique one. But how we decide that "this song/band sounds like that one" is quite an interesting process. All sorts of highly personal little associations and memories tend to be involved.

When I was first moaning on about all this I remember Johnny A saying it was helpful to point out that Arcade Fire resemble Talking Heads. I thought to myself, "they do?! Are there a whole bunch of Talking Heads albums I've never heard of?"
