A debate between drunken SoundsXP hacks drifted towards these 2 former NME writers (Johnny Cigarettes and Steven Wells) now employed at another zine. One person described them as "brilliant", the other described them as "shit".

Steven Wells is a twat. Most of his reviews looked like he'd left Caps Lock on too long and used a very sticky keyboard: "WAAAHGYYYYHYRRRAAAAWKKKTHISBANDARESHIT" or summat. Too polemically political for my liking 'n' all...

Cigarettes did a James Brown and left NME to write for Loaded did he not? He was a tosser 'n' all.

Although given the blandness of the current crop of hacks who line their pages I'd have 'em both back in a shot... I thought from between 1999-2001 NME was an excellent read...

I'd completely forgotten about both of them and am not happy to be remindedof their existence! Swells interviews were een worse than his reviews. He'd just insult the bands instead of asking them real questions and try to wind them up.

I very vaguely recall Wells , but not enough to hold much of an opinion beyond a vague dislike. Johnny Cigarettes' name is the only thing I remember about him - and only then because two Daves I knew in Manchester were distinguished by being called Dave Cigs and Dave Bevvies respectively, so it sort of rang a bell - couldn't offer any sort of opinion on his journalistic quality.

You did. Neil did an elaborate high kicking dance routine with a Russian dwarf. Didn't kick her in the face once.

I read Steven Wells' book and it made no sense. I did find his reviews mostly amusing though but they were very silly. He does a bit of writing for the Guardian online sports page.

One thing I remember about Johnny Cigarettes was when he used a Beavis and Butthead analogy in a Mogwai review; the loud bits wouldnt rule as much if the lame bits weren't there.... or something.
