Favourite festivals for me were Benicassim and Isle of Wight.
Benicassim is, in my humble opinion, almost as good as a fstival can get, quality acts, no strict headliner times, upbeat when you need it, downbeat when you appreciate it, beautiful women and plenty of beer. Brian Wilson, Scissor Sisters, Charlatans, Chem Brothers, Air, Kraftwerk, Lou Reed, Kings of Leon, Ash, Franz Ferdinand, Spiritualized, Love, Primal Scream. How can you grumble! will be using up a quarter of my holiday every year from now on.
Isle of Wight didn't seem to get much press but aside from problems getting in the 1st night I thought it was solid, stereophonics headlined the 1st night, not my bag atall but competent enough. Brilliant sets from The Who, Bowie, Charlatans, Super Furry Animals rest of the weekend. Will go next year if they get a decent line up, rumoured feeder friday and then Sprinsteen or Young one of the other nights.
V was actually half reasonable too for once, strokes, pixies and muse all solid performances. Reading saturday had a superb back to back line up, bloc party, razorlight (entertaining honest), franz ferdinand, libertines, morrissey, white stripes and mark lanegan band.
Though I have been to loads of gigs this year not that many have blown me away, supergrass greatest hits was good, franz ferdinand significantly improved each time i saw them, the killers and ash both did a reasonable enough job, good signer songwriters in bert jansch and kevin tihista. Pixies comeback was always going to struggle to match the hype but was as good as could be reasonably expected, unlike the tears. Red hot chili peppers was pompous overblown mondeo drivers heaven.
babyshambles for the atmosphere if not the visual feast of the halfdead, the dears very pleasent surprise in the barfly. pj harvey, kasabian and the music all entertaining, as were prodigy and interpol.
favourite gigs probably goes to the soundtrack of our lives, i genuinelly think they are the best live band about, with the best actual line up the triple bill brixton all nighter of nick cave and the bad seeds, spiritualized and primal scream in october.
