Ha! Yeah I didn't get it at first - nor the fact that it wasn't a cover - just a bit of a rip-off to which you refer.
My review was from September last year - I said they'd be big, but they'd be happy being marginalised. Oh well. Not too far off - here's some of what I wrote;
While the mainstream indie sound continues to be all things New York and distorted at full volume, Scotland – or more to the point, Glasgow – enjoys its seemingly three-yearly period in vogue. Franz Ferdinand are very much flavour of the month, both in their native city, and now in England’s capital – partly to blame for the “anglified vowels” of the “New Scottish Gentry”, highlighted in ‘Shopping for Blood’.
Gang of Four, Joy Division and PIL all lurk within the recipe, but at times flashes of Talking Heads or even A Certain Ratio’s industrial punk / funk appear, again in the best Scottish traditions – think A.P.B. or even Orange Juice’s dancier moments.
Franz Ferdinand transport us back to a bygone age – an age of floppy fringes, cinematic backdrops and art in pop music. After finishing with current single ‘Darts of Pleasure’, they couldn’t resist raising a triumphant fist, before hurling a battered pair of drumsticks into the audience…well, they say there’s nothing new in Art, and Franz Ferdinand lend weight to that theory, although surely they can be forgiven for wearing their Art so openly upon their (striped) sleeves, especially when they do what they do so very well….
Snapped up by ‘uber–indie’ label Domino, they can only fail if the backhanded compliment gang push them too far to the sidelines. They have the songs, the sound and the look to reach a bigger audience than at present. I suspect, however, that they’re probably happiest out on the edge of things.
