A very male crowd made up of a mixture of beards and the trend setters - though beards are now fashionable so perhaps these are one and the same - have filled Camden’s luxurious Koko and there is an air of expectation that something quite special is on the cards. Critically lauded by all, Brooklyn's TV On The Radio are quickly turning into the name to drop and while they straddle the style/substance divide frequently they always stay just the right side of it. Psychedelia couldn’t sound fresher.
Not so much songs as mini-plays, the band bounce around ideas like the Harlem Globetrotters did basketballs but the core of the act is the vocal interplay between Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, who are the perfect foil to each other. The sound tonight doesn’t always do the band many favours, a great meal will always be ruined by a dirty plate, but when it is right, as on the sublime Province, it is otherworldly.
You can see why Bowie is a fan as they would appeal to his magpie-like approach to genres while staying engaging: think a Parliament for this century, cLOUDDEAD with a budget to beef up their sound or OutKast showing more patience with their build up and exercising less concerns for the mainstream. But it is the mainstream where TV On The Radio will end up with performances like these, in much the same way as bands such as The Arcade Fire, another Bowie approved act, cannot help but win over those put before them. Wolf Like Me and Let The Devil In are both fantastic tonight but it’s a set that should be listened to in its entirety rather than picking out tracks. Something special indeed.
