The surprising emergence of Wigan’s local football team as a genuine power in the domestic game is refreshing for both neutrals sick of the same old big clubs and lovers of luke warm meat pies. It is therefore a good time for the town’s premier music makers to reappear armed with a bevy of hot steaming tunes. Moco, for it is they of whom I refer, have always known how to produce a bloody good hook and in this case they’ve coughed up three. First track, Twice Bitten, Once Shy is Van Morrison fronting The National, Steve’s soulful drawled vocals overlaying the gloom laden percussion and guitar licks before hitting a chorus as big as Scotland (I mention this as it reminded me a tad of Big Country). Anthemic and utterly glorious, it’ll be the performance soundtrack of choice to some of the finest breakdancing tramps this side of of a certain inland pier. Cool Dancing is a rather splendid tuneful plodder, safe but still sinister, like a sleazy Strokes. And if that wasn’t enough, the finale, the magnificently named A Horse is Just a Pony, sees Dave Vanian (ok it’s actually just a rather marvellously melodramatic Steve again) surfing along on a clunky three chord Stooges riff. If the forthcoming mini-LP is as good as the three tracks here, Moco will be bigger than Gary Glitter’s puppy collection by Christmas.
