Monkey Swallows The Universe Jimmy Down the Well / Sheffield Shanty
Sheffield Phonographic Corporation

Article written by Paul M
Jan 10, 2006.

Named after an episode from the cult Chinese kung-fu drama Monkey, Sheffield’s MSTU are as far removed from the lads scene of their hometown as imaginable, and these two free downloads tease the listener with the temptation of more sweet goodies to be found on February’s debut album. Despite its title marooned pirates may find Sheffield Shanty goes down better with a polite smile and a can of Tizer than a Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum, as delicately hushed female vocals overhang tickled acoustic guitars and gently chimed keys. It’s a swoonsome lullaby that even dares to pilfer from Paul Simon’s You Can Call Me Al (and gets away with it). There’s more of a hop skip and a jump about the other track, Jimmy Down The Well, a twee tale of love and possession to the accompaniment of strings, horns and handclaps. They may not match the Arctic Monkeys for hype but these simians certainly know how to sooth even the must furrowed of brows. Lovely.
