A gig tally you can still count on both hands (unless you’re Postman Pat) and already Hackney’s The Bridge Gang are making noticeable ripples in a very large pond thanks to a shit hot demo and solar flare intensity live shows. Bottom of a 5-band bill, denied even the honour of a name check, these three likeably unassuming souls take the microscopic stage and launch fervently into London Sky Tonight, what The Strokes might sound like if they had balls and Julian Casablancas gave up mumbling for Lent.
A bracing assault of grungy angst-pop, capped by José’s Frank Black-esque vocals, proves that demo is no mere fluke, there’s a treasure trove of quality songs queuing up behind it saying ‘play me, play me!’ Be it the rapid-fire ferocity of Neutrino, the hop-skip-wallop of Sarah’s Brother (already a firm fave among the cognoscenti) or the visceral closing cover of Fang’s The Money Will Roll Right In, you could stand in the middle of the Kalahari at noon wearing nothing but Spry Crisp ‘n Dry and not be as blistering as this.
They know they’re good, we know they’re good, and there’s little doubt we’re witnessing the birth of something immensely special and damned exciting here; the seeds are sown, watch them take root and flourish. The Bridge Gang – your new favourite band. Go see.
