2004 was unquestionably the year of Franz Ferdinand; A huge selling album and media plaudits and awards by the truckload. At least half the SoundsXP writers selected their debut long player as their personal album of the year so it's probably not that surprising that it finished top of our poll overall. The band also achieved two out of the top three singles and were in the frame for live act of the year.

However 2004 was also the year that the old guard from the 80s stormed back with both Morrissey and the Pixies showing that there's life in old dogs yet despite the receding hairlines, bad backs and expanding girths. Anyway, enough of the jibbering. This was 2004...
