This from BBC News; "Asked how he came to the decision to omit the likes of Defoe and Bent in favour of Walcott, Eriksson confessed: "Probably not too logically."" Good grief, we're fucked. |

It's utterly bizarre. Out of the 4 forwards he's taking one in an oxygen tent, one freak who should be as he's so tall, one who's so crocked he couldn't make the last 16 of his club's final league match and one who's so young he gets into matches half price... Bent and Defoe might as well give up now. |

I'm strangely arroused by the randomness of it all. |

If Sven didn't know he was on his way out he wouldn't have risked picking those he has. If I was him I'd have stuck 2 fingers up and selected Emile. Cole is blatantly going to be playing off Crouch atleast in some capacity. I am flyig out there at the same time as the 2nd round game if we finish runner up so I could effectively land, turn on my phone, see the news and jump straight back on a plane. |

It's definitely bizarre, though I like it. I wouldn't bother taking Defoe or Bent either. They're alright - but not international class. Sven needs some sort of luck or a miracle. Perhaps the wee lad will deliver. I'd imagine his plan b though is to bring Gerrard forward and have him play behind Crouch. God I wish Wayne Rooney was fit. I'm not normally driven to prayer but this is desperate. |

I was really quite impressed .. Its too little too late, but Sven is at last starting to take some genuine chances (either that, or he just doesn’t give a fuck anymore) Lennon has been really impressive of late .. same for Downing who is a proper left midfielder (remember them?)… certainly untested at int. level but surely you gamble on players you’re not sure off over players you know are shite … Was sad to see Wright-Philips get the chop though, especially in favour of “versatile” but thoroughly insipid Owen Hargreaves And as for Walcott, here’s a little primer… |

The more it sinks in the more I am warming to it, the simple truth is we don't have enough world class strikers, Bent may be in time but isn't now and Defoe and Johnson definately aren't imho. By not being expected to feature to most the media circus and advertising types haven't had a chance to up our expectations and plaster him on the side of every bus also which could work in our favour. Hargreaves is being taken for his versatility not his ability a la Phil Neville and not sure about Jenas but a relatively good mix of form, experience and risk overall. |

As a Southampton fan (the shame) I can confirm that Walcott is bloody amazing, but I'm worried that this is too early for him and won't do him any good. As for taking Rooney, if there's a 1% chance that he'll play then I reckon it's worth it. What the selection shows really is that we don't have enough good (English) strikers in this country. Football should follow cricket and put a limit on the number of non-english players in each team, but that's never going to happen. |

I think you're all worrying too much - it's a fairly predictable choice overall but the new blokes have all been excellent this season. Owen Hargreaves gets some stick but he plays in a Bayern Munich team that's just won back-to-back championships and gets regular Euro footy, which is more than some of our lot. If only Sven had the balls to drop Beckham! I reckon this is Sven gone demob happy: you watch - he'll be getting on the plane in his hawaiian shirt and red-white and blue tin helmet doing Basil Fawlty impressions. Even if he has to rule out Rooney, we've still got enough to win that World Cup! |
