From a nostalgic point of view, this is sad and the end of a great pop icon. When I began buying it in 1983, Mark Ellen was editor and the writers were generally excellent: Neil Tennant, Dave Rimmer, Tom Hibbert and Ian Cranna to name but a few. There was, of course, Linda Duff but that's neither here nor there. In those days, Smash Hits routinely subjected pop and film stars of the day to playful ridicule instead of building them into idols, the badges were brilliant, and my love of their ironic use of "inverted" commas is as strong today as it was back then. I only stopped buying it after Paul Gascoigne appeared on its cover in 1990. RIP indeed. |

Smash Hits' importance from the ages of 8-13 is significantly responsible for making me what I am today musical and otherwise... Although whether the mag deserves merit for that is for you to question ![]() |
