Mojo magazine's latest attempt to fill space with a pointless list, is a top 50 Weirdest Albums Ever list. http://www.mojo4music.com/14320/50-weirdest-albums/ It includes many fine albums, but their definition of weird eludes me. It seems to be a mix of left field acts, outsider artists, records that broke new ground at the time of release, mainstream artists departing from their usual sound and stuff that I wouldn't describe as weird at all. Some artists (Patty Waters, Sun Ra & Throbbing Gristle for example) are represented by albums that I wouldn't necessarily consider their weirdest. It might have been more appropriate to call it 50 greatest weird albums, not 50 weirdest. Any way what albums do you all think are weird that didn't make the Mojo list? Use any definitions of weird you like, Mojo certainly seem to have used the term subjectively. Here's a few of my suggestions: Louise Huebner ... Louise Huebner's Seduction Through Witchcraft (1969) Album of spells by the 'Official Witch Of Los Angeles County' with electronic music background. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV8x4GhgfPs Argo Transacord LP series (1961 -1978) Literally the sounds of trains! I'm sure it can't be just me that thinks listening to recordings of trains is weirder than listening to Trout Mask Replica. The first one, The West Highland Line, was so successful that another 40 odd followed! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtymGAfwQgQ Patty Waters ... Patty Waters Sings (1966) Patty's second album, College Tour, did make the list, but for me the track Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair makes the first one by far the weirder. Unfortunately, a certain Fast Show character has diminished it's impact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTF_NyJuBAo Tortura ... The Sounds Of Pain & Pleasure volumes one and two (1965) Whipping and moaning with café jazz accompaniment! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK62EU61e8E Pneumershonic ... Frequencies Of The Beast (date unknown) Genuine outsider artist Paul Bourre improvises lyrics over music provided by Matt Jasper http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/LG/Pneumersho ... eakout.mp3 The Residents ... Eskimo (1979) The Ralph Records 10th Anniversary Album was definitely worthy of inclusion in the Mojo list, but a Resident's album proper surely warrants a place too. To quote Wikipedia, "The pieces on Eskimo are generally made up of sound effects, occasional playing on home-made instruments and gibberish standing in for actual Inuit. The stories were all created by the group and, despite their claims otherwise, is not meant to be a true historical document of life in the Arctic." The sleevenote stories are designed to be read in time with listening to the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duIdkblpaJU Kathy Fire ... Songs of Fire: Songs of a Lesbian Anarchist (1978) Militant feminist lesbian anarchist folk singer. Not weird in the musical sense, but a unique record to say the least. Recorded by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xulZCsNviAo Throbbing Gristle ... 1st Annual Report (1975) Weirder than the Mojo listed 2nd Annual report, mainly for the inclusion of the track Very Friendly, in which Genesis P-Orridge recounts the tale of the Moors Murderers over an industrial noise backing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwLj2K124Mg Bob Harrington ... Ten Reasons Why Madalyn Murray O'Hair Must Be Stopped ... And Ten Ways o Stop Her (1977) Bob Harrington, 'Chaplain Of Bourbon Street' talks for the entire first side of this album about why Madalyn Murray O'Hair 'America's Atheist Leader' must be stopped. On the second side he tells us how. The first way is prayer. Couldn't find a soundclip for this one, but if any of you really want to hear it, I'll lend you my copy. Mae West ... Way Out West (1966) The Hollywood actress, well into her 70s at the time, tackles songs by the likes of The Beatles, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates and Percy Sledge. Five years later, pushing 80 she recorded another album of rock standards, Great Balls Of Fire, which includes her covering The Doors! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yJajJ_B5R4 The Shaggs ... Philosophy Of The World (1969) Great album made weird by the fact that they weren't trying to be weird. Three sisters reluctantly pushed into forming a band by their father. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR9d4ESlpHY PJ Proby ... Lord Horror Not actually heard this all the way through, but the very idea of 60s crooner PJ Proby bringing David Brittons banned novel to life is somewhat disturbing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9roSKOLqR2Q |

Is there a link to the Mojo list? Apologies if it's in the above post and I've just missed it. |

A couple more: Yma Sumac ... Legend Of Jivaro (1957) Could have picked any of several LPs by the Peruvian singer who claimed to be descended from Atahualpa, the last Incan emperor. Picked this one because it has the best sleeve. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNcQm0cJH1I Lucia Pamela ... Into Outer Space With Lucia Pamela (1969) The American band leader also did a colouring book of the same name! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qACGIfJIirA |

Was hoping there'd be some really interesting replies to this one, with at least a few albums I'd not heard of; but not a single suggestion. Oh well, here's a few more from me, if nothing else it'll push this thread back up the page and hopefully prompt a few responses. Chris Morris ... Blue Jam (1997) Who'd have thought an album compiled directly from a BBC Radio 1 series would make on to a list of anything weird? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUePblNU860 Cobra Killer & Kapajkos ... Das Mandolinenorchester (2005) Digital hardcore electroclash duo re-record several of their earlier songs backed by a mandolin orchestra. The finished product is maybe their most immediately accessible LP, but still a weird idea to begin with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrePVLBXUWI Henry Flynt ... Back Porch Hillbilly Blues volumes 1 & 2 (2003) Any of Henry Flynt's albums could have made this list, but it was when he merged his earlier experiments with jazz, raga and free noise with his love of rural roots music, such as blues and hillbilly that he made this, my favourite of his recordings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r1LRv_8O8E Armand Schaubroeck ... A Lot of People Want To See Armand Schaubroeck...Dead (1972) After making two of the greatest, oddest garage singles of the 1960s, College Psychology Of On Love/ Babe We're Not Part Of Society by Churchmice and One More Day, One More Night/Lord My Cell Is Cold by Kack Klick, Armand Schaubroeck made this triple concept album, an autobiographical rock opera with spoken words between each song, and all re-enacting the story of how Armand went to jail for stealing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc3iuzb3U8E Nice article on Armand Schaubroeck by Julian Cope here: http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/fe ... haubroeck/ Nurse With Wound ... Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An Umbrella (1979) Probably the sort of thing most people think of when they hear the term weird music. Nihilist, screeching, wailing, moaning, banging, crunching and noisy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gBk6jvtFx0 Ambrose Kelly Reynolds ... America's Greatest Hits (1982) Former Pink Industry, Big In Japan man with an album of famous political speeches and assassinations from the mid-1960s set to music. http://www.soundsbox.com/album.php?al=17346 |

Patience Milchy. When I get access to a computer that I can view the Mojo list on (it uses too-fancy tech for my gadgets) and post links more easily, I'll see if I've got anything. I'm not sure I consider the records I own weird though. |

How about these weird'uns: Howlround - Secret Songs of Savalamah An album made solely with and within an abandoned derelict customs house in Belgrade. Spooky tape-loop masterpiece. Matmos - A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure Glitch electronica consisting of audio samples of medical procedures, most memorably liposuction and a nose being snapped. Wolf Eyes - Burned Mind Rotted noise band almost hits the mainstream after being signed by Sub Pop. Produces songs called 'Stabbed in the Face' and 'Dead in a Boat'. V/VM - Hate You Notable for the scribbled Russ Abbott featuring cover. Title track is a twenty minute destruction of 'Hey Jude' by The Beatles. Nate Wooley - The Almond 72 minute single-track album of sustained looped trumpet tones. Equal parts harsh and beautiful. Colin Webster and Graham Dunning - Estigate An album of duo improvisations weaving together tenor/bari sax and a turntable being played with dentistry tools and pencils. Gail Brand and Morgan Guberman - Dig a Ditch and Get In Another improvising duo album, this one for trombone and vocals. Like an incredibly drunk Tom Waits. KTL - V Amazing drone album from two masters of the form. Final track 'Last Spring: A Prequel' will melt your mind - an alternately gruff and terrified French voice seemingly struggles with demonic possession for 20 minutes over abstract noise that sounds like a field-recording of hell. I have a few of those records but not as many as you! Great to see Ambrose Reynolds again - love the Shaggs album and have always been terrified of early TG (Hamburger Lady from Second Annual Report used to freak me out). I'll think some more on this subject but Culturecide's Tacky Souvenirs of Pre-Revolutionary America is pretty weird in the way they steal and sing over tracks by Bruce, Pat Benetar, McCartney/Jackson and the like (I think this might have been before Negativland did it with U2): Here's their demolition of USA for Africa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeGVObZg ... 03D740DE43 |

How about Celtic Frost's Into the Pandemonium. 80's thrash was a very rigidly defined thing. Into the Pandemonium with its horns and occasionally almost dancy beats very much wasn't. And then they go and lob THIS into the middle of the album. might also check out New Wet Kojak, the Girls vs Boys free jazz/dance side project. THough i cna only find the more normal things on youtube, which aren't weird at all. the albusm do tend to have plenty of parping though. |

Actually, having listened to Into the Pandemonium on the way home, there's more (top quality) normal thrash than I remember.and the horns must be on To Mega Therion. But still a top record. |

Was a big fan of Hellhammer, Frost and all things Tom G Warrior back in the day. Recently bought a ticket to see his new band Triptykon. |
