After a fairly considerable gap since their last release Moco dish up a tastebud whetter for the forthcoming album. And fortunately it’s another juicy portion of melodic rock n roll. It kicks off with a riff that sounds like Johnny Marr playing the Bunnymen accompanied by a crooning Jim Morrisson. Wearing a Stetson. Which is a bloody good way to commence proceedings. But then it nutmegs you with an airpunching, footstomping chorus that is as big as the guitarist Rigby’s ceiling tickling mane. ‘ave it! B-side Flooky Wonderland may be less instant but is equally enjoyable; imagine the Strokes attempting a 60s psychedelic wigout with frontman Steve Jones (no not the Sex Pistols or Babybird fellas) seemingly delivering up his stomach lining along with his gut dredging bellowed delivery.

This starts off sounding a little like one of the Coral's rockier tracks, but I guess Moco can't help that, being vaguely from the same neighbourhood or something. Thankfully, this is far more sinister, employing the darker bits of VU with the darker bits of Johnny Cash and a bit of rockabilly thrown in. Keep an eye on these.

Moco’s debut album is actually on release in the U.S. (our very own Cath A ordered one via T’Internet - she couldn’t wait ! ). In fact the band will be going over there soon to play a string of dates to follow up their College and Alt.Radio successes to date.

“Baby When You Die” brings together the bands more sophisticated production, with the bands flair for the less obvious, but genuinely black humour -Rigby’s guitar work is a jangling and riotous rattle of perfection – Misra's drums and Higham's bass are just locked into the brash anthemic grind of Steve Jone’s inspired vocal lines.

“David who died was a guy who never knew affection.....He went downstairs and grouted in the kitchen”

Although there’s the inevitable twist (the brilliant video matches this concept), there’s no doubt that Moco feed off the same, dark, more surreal vibe of a band like the Monkees, but also thrive on the raw Detroit sound of the MC5. “Baby When You Die” is the pure distillation of this whole idea.

“Flooky Wonderland” veers away from the theme of poncho fuelled videos and blasts out a more epically influenced brand of crashing guitars and pulsating mantras, that mangles a climaxing Jim Morrison at his leather trousered peak and mixes it, like a head on car crash, with the sound of Pistols era punk rock.

Fitting, that after a clutch of great singles, it would seem that Moco are moving ever on with a brisker pace forward - and that this is yet a sampler of what is sure to be an exciting and important long player.

MMMMM
