REM - love them or hate them, compare the country-rock of Murmur to Lifes Rich Pageant with Document, Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up (a most underrated album if ever there was one) and Reveal - not one of them are alike and each one of them are bloody brilliant. The last two albums though are truly, shockingly awful. Accelerate was a slight step up musically from Around the Sun but several steps down lyrically. Absolutely dreadful - but at least their back catalogue suggests they are capable of reinventing themselves agin. I lie in hope for another great REM album. |

Bad shout on Radiohead! Doom laden indie dirge became doom laden electronica dirge... That's hardly a huge evolution... |

The Horror's did pretty well out of their recent transformation from the garagey Strange House to the kraut-rockish Primary Colours. The Clash: the pithy punk of The Clash to London Calling just two years later is a pretty lofty jump in musical style. and of course the wildest diversion comes from Scott Walker - from classic crooning (Scott 4) to punching meat (The Drift) |

Suzanne Vega - quaint traditional folk to cabaret via syth-heavy pop and avant-garde industrialist noise. |
