Disabled people. Yup. Well, no. Not so much disabled people per se as the way TV tends to portray them and the way the Disability Lobby portrays them. When was the last time you saw a disabled person on TV who didn't have amazing insight thanks to his/her disability, wasn't smiling through the tears, being incredibly brave - in other words, when was the last time TV gave disabled people the right to be every bit as obnoxious, selfish, or thoughtless as the rest of us? Actually, that's all just a rationalisation. I don't like disabled people. They make me queasy. I'm glad (on a rational level) that there are scores of people who don't think like me and are only too happy to help (or fight for the rights of) disabled people. But I'm really, really not one of them. |
