I know what you mean, Shands, but to be fair in this instance, it was the Swansea player rightly sent off so Cardiff can't entirely be blamed for the 2 minutes 20 seconds that was wasted.

No reality check needed, so no idea why you've put the bunting up yet again (or do you never take it down?). We've qualified from a relatively poor group but nothing more expected. Last night showed just how far the gap is increasing between the second rate nations (and we are one - Wales are 4th rate, incidentally) and the top tier. Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, etc can beat the rest of us for fun.

And on a minor point, it wasn't quite their second string - 5 of them would normally start, including 3 of the defenders.

I think you're ignoring that not everyone is a Messi or Ronaldo and that teams don't play with 11 players of their ilk or attributes. I will now chuck in a few players, off the top of my head, who genuinely will have been considered world class in their time, not just by the British press, as possibly worthy of place in a World X1:

Sol Campbell
Wayne Rooney
Ashley Cole
Paul Gascoigne
Alan Shearer
Teddy Sheringham
Rio Ferdinand
Gary Neville
David Beckham
Paul Scholes

Some of these may seem laughable now but they weren't then, on their day, even if their time of comparative 'greatness' may have brief before they disappeared back into the pack. Some of them mya have been incredibly limited (Gary Neville was a superb full back in the 90s when defenders first, wing backs second). The most debatable one there is Beckham, but I'd say the cases for Gascoigne and Ashley Cole (a few years ago, not now) are particularly strong. The rest are a tad more questionable and thrown in for debate.

Ashley Cole was the other player that sprang to my mind.

As for the rest, Scholes, was one I possibly overlooked. The rest were good/great players in their positions (and these are mostly the players I considered) but I am not sure they were world class.

Campbell was voted into the 2002 World Cup Finals Team of the Tournament by FIFA and I don't think he was actually our best centre back that tourney - Ferdinand was better.
