MOGWAI My
Father My King Tedious, Turkish tinged instrumental twoddle that clocks in at over 20 minutes starting quietly and winding up in a mass of feedback. They are laughing at us, they really are.
MUSE Feeling Good Normally I'd defend the output of this band but this really is quite ludicrious. It's a great old jazzy ballad and it is utterly and completely destroyed by Bellamy and the boys who must have been on the cider when they decided to cover it. MATTHEW JAY Call My Name Out I always find it irritating when an artist decides to fill the gaps with "pa pa pa pa" or whatever as if they've forgotten the words or have given trying to find something to rhyme with "orange". This is one of those songs and not one of the best from Jay's otherwise impressive debut album. KINGS OF CONVENIENCE Weight of my Worlds Pleasant enough plodding lo-fi-ish number with shimmering riff. ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE There's a Silence A name change has apparently been forced upon the Brighton band by a Doors covers combo from the States. Which is sad. This song is ok but fails to live up to the promise of the earlier singles.
SNUFF Nick Northern (2001) Basically this is little more than a plug for a remix album Snuff are peddling. Not as good the version they put out last year but if it persuades a single person to check out any of the fantastic Northern Soul reissues available on Kent or Goldmine it's great by me. |

An old Stranglers hit gets the Amos treatment ie breathy Kate Bush style warblings and will most probably be a hit. GOLDFRAPP Pilots Pleasant enough in that Saint Etienne kindaway although someone has foolishly given them the old "pa poo poo poo" style synth drums that Kelly Marie irritated the planet with back in the 70s. And the silly buggers have only gone and used them haven't they. Report them to the Daft Drum Squad immediately. TURIN BRAKES Emergency 72 I'm not sure these boys would recognise an emergency if it sped by with a big neon sign flashing "RING 999!!!", with their melodic acoustic pap. They're from Balham and having lived there I'm amazed they have survived this long, the fey wimps. SUPERCHUNK Late-Century Dream A sort of less high pitched more poppy version of Grandaddy. ECHOBELLY Kali Yuga Frustrating single by a once-useful band.
Just when you think they may be about to rediscover their early form they produce a
single taht ambles along always just on the edge of kicking in with a useful riff and then
failing to deliver. |

SIX BY SEVEN So Close Nothing of interest here, come on now, please move along. Unimaginative alt-rock by numbers. |
THE HEALERS The Last Ride Johnny Marr's new band do a passable version of a joint Stone Roses and Oasis covers band. It's all musically very competant as you'd expect of something Marr might get in involved in. Unfortunatley it's also very boring. KATASTROPHY WIFE Gone Away Former Babes in Toyland's Kat will have been reaching for the throat lozenges after screeching for 3 minutes plus of grungey sub-Hole punk. |
