Singles sales have gone from 31m in 2003 to 162m last year. That's over 5 times as many.

Bands don't need so many people involved to get records out now. So the middle men are surplus to requirements. Bands need to realise that a bit more. You can do a lot with word-of-mouth now if you're good enough.

Of course there will be decent bands struggling and falling under the radar. But hasn't that always been the case?

He did 'Your Woman' but the vocals were all Nat Johnson (she was on the bill). She's ace, too. And yeah it was pretty good for an acoustic set (he played for about 25 minutes, I reckon).

Aren't those 'single' sales just random album track downloads? It could just mean that people downloading entire albums is plummeting.

I think it counts single track downloads, yeah.

Luddites were the group who opposed machines taking their work away from them during the industrial revolution. I don't know the guy's first name but the instigator's surname was Ludd.

The word 'luddite' is sometimes misused but generally applies to someone who fails to accept new technologies.

I'm a luddite - purely through laziness.

Just been looking this up. It may well have been a name which was made up and attched to the movement. There doesn't seem to be proof either way! Ned Ludd or Ned Lud, possibly born Ned Ludlam or Edward Ludlam are the names wikipedia lists.

I wasn't referring to your good self as a Luddite I was directing that at the elusive 'Music Industry' and their severe lack of foresight in embracing modern technology. CDs should be long buried in favour of digital formats.

Laughing Nicely put. The dafter the better I say, it shows bottle and character.

But, on topic, you can't call CDs luddite while espousing the merits of vinyl, dude. CDs are, at least for now, the most practical physical format left. They are the only trad format that can be put straight into a computer for crying out loud.

Also, and I might be wrong with this, but I kinda thought the bulk of the record industry HAD embraced digital formats? I mean, they sell shit loads of downloads, and don't have to pay any duplication costs...no?

The best format (physical) was the mini disc. Sound quality as good as the best downloads/files or CDs. Virtually indestructable, small, convenient. Better than CDs overall, it's a shame Sony f***ed it up by keeping it to themselves rather than making it a universal product.

For larger labels, duplication costs have never been the issue, marketing has. Now the market has been opened up so much, marketing is more important than ever. It might even costs more now to acquire a customer than ever.

But what's the big deal with either format, vinyl or Cd? If a label/band think they can sell either/both (or don't care about the cost) surely they can stick out whatever format they like.
