From Wikipedia which explains it better than me:

The two tracks were recorded as 12" long versions and later edited to 7" by engineer Peter Woolliscroft using one of the first Sony PCM 1610 Digital editing systems available in UK. The 7" version is a more structured version with a commercial synthpop feel; the 12" is more chaotic with the emphasis on electronic rhythms rather than melody. The 7" version plays at 33.3rpm to accommodate its length of around five and a half minutes. Both versions bear the same catalogue number "FAC 63" despite these differences.

I haven't listened to either yet. One could be a re-recording - there have been a couple since 1987.

Could be. Sound earlier though. I first knew of the confusion when I played that version on air one and people called and phoned in asking what it was. I didn't have a clue! It was the only version I knew!

I think the 2009 reissue of Movement via the extra tracks tries to tidy it up but to no avail. Don't even start on the different versions of Ceremony!

There are at least 4 bands called Ceremony too which is pretty confusing! I only like one of them but googling doesn't make hunting them down very easy!
