Oh dear. Starts ok for 2 or 3 songs but then becomes really dreary MOR soft rock.

I've seen mixed reviews. I posted the link to the stream but I haven't bothered listening to it yet. Maybe I'll give it a miss altogether then. I've never really listened to them anyway actually.

thought the single was dreary and sounded like well, a shins sound-alike... but i have to say it's really grown on me.

gonna give the album a good chance too. the last one took a while to settle in for me so i'm going to afford this one the same opportunity to grow.

Not even going to try. I've never understood what they are trying to achieve. F minus.

My Dad just played one off this on his radio show. Didn't think it was that bad but it was fairly nondescript and middle of the road. Lukewarm reviews all round too.

As a general rule: The Shins are great. I don't make the rules, but that's the rule.

I haven't heard the new album yet but contrary to what Kev thinks, the reviews have been pretty decent, an average of 7.0 as you can see here: http://www.anydecentmusic.com/review/4255/The-Shins-Port-of-Morrow.aspx

Does that average contain fan blog reviews? Uncut gave it 7/10 and considering they'll happily suck off The Shins at every given opportunity I thought that was a bit low. The only other review I have to hand is a 6/10 from NME. In general the reports I've heard about it haven't been great. But still, I've only heard 2 songs off it myself.

Laughing Agree - or at least about the Shins up to now! I haven't heard the new album yet but will do so asap. I've read that it's a new version of the Shins (i.e. Mercer plus various hired hands) and that worries me, given that his Broken Bells project with Danger Mouse was seriously dull.

Well said. And this album further proves Walsh's law for me. It's great! Really great. Yeah it's MOR soft-rock but with melodies and sentiments that get lodged in your head like all Shins stuff.

Maybe I like MOR soft-rock more than the average person but hey ho. My mate wrote a review of it and complained that it sounded like Elton John. WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH THAT???

I really, really like it. It's still the weakest album The Shins have put out mind but that doesn't matter.
