I thought Black Swan was excellent. Went to see Hereafter last night. Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Mat Damon it's a film about three people affected by death and the afterlife. it's OK but it's not as profound/thought provoking asd I'd hoped and it's very slow. I want to see Gnomeo & Juliet and True Grit next I think.

You wouldn't have thought they could string out a whole film about it but was surprisingly gripping. Well worth seeing.

Black Swan
Moderately enjoyable, but falls between two stalls; neither deft enough to compare to the likes of Repulsion Or Peeping Tom, nor over the top enough to have the appeal of the more lurid of the giallo films of the 70s.
Think Aronofsky did the whole obsessive pursuit leads to mental breakdown thing with a lot more imagination in Pi.

NEDS
Very good film. Gritty, at times blackly funny and superbly acted throughout.
Character development is sometimes a little clunky, but recommended none the less.

Also recommend Winter's Bone for anyone who missed it last year.
Now back in the cinemas following it's Oscar nominations (shame Jennifer Lawrence will almost certainly lose best actress to Natalie Portman), as well as available on DVD.

Biutiful
Partial return to form for director Alejandro González Iñárritu, after the fairly risible Babel. Ends up overplaying his hand in piling on the misery, but Javier Bardem gives another excellent performance.

Never Let Me Go
Awkward amalgam of love story and SF. Fairly engaging, but not a film to stay with you. The SF elements are kind of hackneyed.

Inside Job
A veritable rogues gallery of some of the most loathsome and despicable bad guys ever to infect a cinema screen. A film to leave you wanting to beat many of it's featured players to a painful death. One of the film's villains, US treasury secretary Tim Geithner, today praised George Osbourne's handling of the UK economy. Far from this being a vindication of Osbourne's cuts, it is a reason to strike fear into the UK population.
A highly recommended film.

Day For Night
Not a new film, but back on UK cinema screens for a limited period.
None of the caustic cynicism of many films about film making (The Bad And The Beautiful, Le Mepris, Sunset Boulevard etc), but still a film that engages, with interesting characters and insights into the film making process.

Confessions
Funny how in the west, vengence themed movies are nearly always tired and formulaic, whilst in the far east there has been a profusion of highly imagnitive films on the same theme. This one is not as violent as Chan-wook Park's vengance trilogy, but is equally off the wall and derranged. Recommended for fans of Park, Takashi Miike etc.

Bighton Rock

SPOILER WARNING

Pretty much agree with Wurzel on this one. A good film when judged in it's own right rather than in comparisson to the book or the original film.
Reservations about the ending. Don't know why they copied the ending of the original film and not the novel; the books ending was only expunged from the Boulting brother's film for reasons of censorship.

Nasty but gripping. Not sure about the ending though.

Legacy: Black Ops

Saw this at Raindance last year (when it was just called Legacy).
A twisted, violent not quite schlocky, conspiracy thriller, a little reminiscent of Jacob's Ladder (but less up it's own arse), though better than I've just made it sound. Idris Elba is very good indeed. A good one if you're not in the mood for an all night Bela Tarr retrospective.

Not so much a new film, but new to DVD anyway... BURKE & HARE. Tosh. Neither a comedy nor a drama in effect. At least the accents generally sounded ok though.
