Thought I'd do a brief intro. I spend my time playing obscure bands on an obscure radio station and writing about them in an over excited manner in my blog (www.radioscilly.com/asheardonair/blogs/kevsblog) and will now be writing the odd over exctited review of obscure bands on soundsxp.

Fave band? Either Spacemen3/Spiritualized or The Ronettes (is there a better song than Keep On Dancing?!)

I've spent the week trying in vain to put together a top 30 tracks of the year to broadcast this week. To begin with my top 30 consisted of 108 songs. I've had to be cruel but you can expect at least a couple of Swedish acts to be included.

Nice to meet you all.

Evening.

Nice to see some enthusiasm in the usually fallow post christmas period.

Well I'm always enthusiatic! It's not a quiet time for me though. It's the busiest time of the year radio/blog wise. All those stupid lists I'm obliged to do.

Is it healthy spending over a month working out what the top 30 songs of the year are? Probably not. But Gillian McKeith is supposedly 'healthy'. And look at the fucking state of that thing.

Yeah welcome Kev. I will make my way over to your blog at some point.

Scilly Isles eh? Always wanted to go there just to order a pint in the most southern part of these islands!

That's not the most common reason why people visit, but I'll make sure I have a beer for you next time I'm out!

Channel Islands are more southerly, although they're pretty much in France so they don't count. And we've got better beer.

Questions, questions, questions....

So what's the "better beer" that you Scillians (?) drink?

Why do people visit the Scilly Isles? Is it for the weather, landscape or wildlife?

And which out of the two local footy teams do you support?

And good call on the Ronettes (less keen on Spacemen 3/Spiritualised).

We have a local micro brewery which does a few ales, lots of the beer here comes from Cornish brewers. We're talking real ale rather than lager. You can get a Carlsberg or Guinness in pretty well every pub here though. I like Doom Bar which is brewed by Sharps in North Cornwall. Scilly is not part of Cornwall though, this is a point that should be fully understood!

People visit for all the reasons you mentioned. Where else in the UK do you get white sands? We get more hours of sunlight than anywhere else in Britain. I don't have a car, but when I did the keys would remain in the ignition and the doors unlocked. A lot of people here never lock their front doors.
You can't get away with theft here. If you nick my car, what are you going to do with it? You can hardly flog it to a dealer a few hundred miles away. Things police themselves here, of course there are problems, the same as anywhere else though.

The local footy teams... I've played for both. The way they work is like picking teams in a school playground. At the start of the season all the people who want to play get together, and the 2 captains pick players one by one. You can play in the league for 20 years and alternate teams every season!
I don't play in the league any more and I haven't watched a game for years.

I put Phil Spector above most human beings - purely on music, not his 'extra curricular' activities. The Ronettes were his masterpiece. I have every song (as far as I know) that they've ever made.

One of the few people I put above Spector is Jason Pierce. I bought my first Spiritualized album mid 90s. Wasn't too fussed about it. It was 4 years on from that that it all clicked and I realised they were the reason that ears were created.

Same with Spacemen 3. Neither band are first listeners, they require some efforf but it's WELL worth it.

Oh... it's 'Scillonians'. You can refer to the place as The Isles Of Scilly or Scilly, but Scilly Isles is wrong... and if you call the place 'The Scillies' you deserve to be shot.

There is only 1 Isles Of Scilly here. It should NEVER be pluralised.

Cornish Ales rate above even Spector (ok I'm exaggerating here)... Sharps are wonderful - Doom Bar, Coaster, etc... and I really like Skinners and St Austell's beers too. My holiday in St Ives in 2009 was an ale fueled revelation.

Ronnie Spector is still an absolute Goddess. Great voice, brilliant stage presence and a song back catalogue that others would die for.

Never occured to me about the crime thing. Amazing.

Impressed by your knowledge of Cornish beer! Google Ales Of Scilly for the local stuff. Brewed by my former school teacher!

Ronnie is indeed a Godess.

So if you come into my flat and nick my DVD player... what are you going to do with it?
You're on a small island. You can't sell it down the pub. People will know I've been robbed! It's hard to get away with much here. We get people who come from 'the mainland' to work here for the summer, realise everything is unlocked, think they can get away with stealing... then end up banged up! You're gonna get caught. There's nowhere to hide!

If I had to choose one region to supply beer for the rest of my life it would be Cornwall. Wonderful stuff. I know jimgibb's a keen advocate too and he goes on his hols there a few times every year.

If there's one thing we get right down here it's beer! As for the music scene... there isn't one. Unless you like bog standard punk/metal bands or Jack Johnson soundalikes *shudders*

Greetings KevW.

You've successfully managed to make me crave Cornish ale right now, which is handy really 'cos I'm off to the pub.

so what if I was craving ale before I read this post.

Wow. Didn't know that. Sharps was little known down here til a few years ago. They make good beer though. As for St Austell brews, give me Proper Job over Tribute any day

St Austell brewery was notoriosly shit far making real ales a few years ago. They just own half the pubs down this way so people had no choice.

They still have a very bad name but have got better, scrapped a lof of the old beers and made some good ones. Proper Job is a particular fave of mine. HSD is another nice one (and a very old one) but I wouldn't have more than about 10 pints in a session or you won't be able to walk/speak/see for the best part of a week.

I've had Proper Job in London too. May have been in a Nicholson's as a guest.

Never seen Betty Scoggs in London though.
