The title should be the 50 best UK indie records of all time. I presume they mean indie as an attitude as there are a number of major labels in that list.

The free CD with Mojo is pretty good this month with selections from the top 50.

Yes, it's definitely meant as 'Indie' - attitude wise. (Indie lost its meaning way back when ey? It confuses the youngsters like myself - I never was sure what it was and now that has become intensified through the likes of this list)

They've left loads off (goes away to think what's not there that should be)

P.S - somebody asked me if I worked for MOJO the other day. Obviously not, if this list is anything to go by and Bola is right - it's UK orientated.

As I mentioned elsewhere on the net you didn't have to be on an indie label to qualify for the indie charts. It was the distributor that had to be an independent hence PWL topping the charts with Kylie and Jason whilst indie labels such as Beggars Banquet lost out as their distribution was handled by a major!

Indie meant indie label regardless of the genre of music but soon pigeonholed UK guitar based bands or certain record labels (Creation, Sarah, 53rd & 3rd etc) in the mid eighties. It lost it's meaning when it became a marketable ploy for the major record labels with now that's what I Call Alternative 76.

I heard Scouting For Girls described as indie pop the other day. Jesus.

It’s quite sly of Mojo. Produce a list down the pub, choose bands fairly randomely from 30 years of UK “indie” and then invite a level of discussion that you wouldn’t get if Mojo scribes had properly thought things through. It’s a very partial list that omits, as Phil June Bride comments in that funny Anorak thread, Television Personalities (or Comet Gain!) and includes a song I always hated, It’s a Fine Day. And of course it’s nearly all white boys with guitars – not much gender or race equality there I think. Not bought this Mojo and won’t – standards there have been slipping for some time.
