I’m saddened by this. He really was one of my all-time heroes.

Indeed, I always wanted my life to pan out in a similar fashion. While I have done my fair share of womanising, drinking, ranting and drug-taking (and I’ve managed to get a marriage and a divorce under my belt before I was 30), It’s all going wrong on the professional front: I’ve gave up journalism a few years ago and I fear my first novel will always be “in the pipeline” ... Oh well

But my serious point is this: In this age of zero-talent celebrity and vacuous media, could someone as intellectual and as genuinely thought-provoking as Mailer ever become as “famous” or as culturally significant ever again. I fear not…

I didn't know a lot about him to be honest....and as it turns out I don't know a lot about you either, matty...like that you're a divorced man and an aspiring novelist. You're even more attractive now...

It's hard to think of anyone as significant. I read a lot of Mailer at Uni (for my American Studies course we had to read lots of his 60s writings) and no-one else was writing cultural commentary like Armies of the Night or The White Negro, let alone An American Dream.

I haven't tried to model myself on him though!

I've only read two of his novels.

'An American Dream'. Which I liked. I was young when I read it. I think I would get much more from it, now. There's an idea.

The other one I read was 'Ancient Evenings'. I don't remember much about it now. It is probably 15 years since I read it.

I'm more partial to his journalism than his novels to be honest. I must confess I never finished the "Executioners Song" ... I suppose I should attempt that again

And Cavers, I'm delighted to know I’ve gone up in your estimations. However, please be aware that a novel “in the pipeline” is a writer’s parlance for “not actually started yet,” (sadly). I never realised being a divorcee was attractive, though .. I’ll be sure to big that up in future

Oh yeah, we love a divorced man! It shows experience and the ability to flow in and out of situations - also once you've been married once most people wont go there again, unless you're my brother (male version of liz taylor) so for the girl who doesn't want to get married, you're a catch - throw in the writer's equation (conjures up images of much chin stroking and pen chewing) and you become irresistible

I want to read something on Norman now. This is my problem, I want to absorb all the writers. There are so many thinkers out there - I can't embrace them all. I always feel like i've missed out though when a writer touches somebody's life like the way that you have described, matty.

I'd advise reading some of the obituaries in today’s papers as a good primer. I’d be interested in getting a girl’s view on him, actually. He’s very much a "man’s man" I reckon - not to mention a serial womaniser and anti-feminist (though I suspect a lot of the latter was a wind up). Be interesting to know if a modern woman could see past all that ...

Oh, and he stabbed his second wife in the neck afer she refused to partake in group sex ...
