the point about gangsta rap and homophobia is very good. i grew up with an intense love of gangsta rap (which i still harbour, though i hate modern/post 2002 GR), and yet it is sometimes painfully homophobic.

although i do think there is a difference. the point of gangsta rap isn't to be homophobic.

and the terms are used against people who generally aren't gay as some childish attempt at insult...thus posing the question, in my mind at least, whether it is even actual homophobia (would it be racist if i called a white englishman a 'Gook'?!) or just infantile idiocy.

and most importantly there are more GR tracks that don't involve homophobic insults than do. which means it's possible to enjoy the genre and completely side step songs which contain it.

in fact, as far as i've noticed, even the brutal 'Hit em Up' doesn't contain a single homophobic insult...which if you know the song/history behind it is fairly gobsmacking!

you're right cavey. i've been tying myself up over the censorship/free speech thang for donkey's years.

if you truly believe in free speech, then i guess you should believe any artist/political group etc etc should be able to say anything they want, no matter how objectionable.

trouble is, most of us aren't actually comfortable with that. whether it's the BNP spouting their shite or abu hamza (sorry about spelling) spouting his (for example). and thus, you get into the whole censorship debate. same applies to music.

you could argue, well, free speech stops where the laws regarding advocating violence to ethnic minorities/gay people etc, etc start. but then, again, where do you draw the line on that. particularly with music.

i mean, if you're going to ban something by two live crew (i think it was them!) who trotted out some particularly nasty sexist lyrics in the 90's, then shouldn't we also ban 'smack my bitch up' by the prodigy. and if we're going to ban that, should we ban neil young's 'down by the river' because he talks about shooting his woman dead? where do we stop and start?

jesus, if we were going to ban every record that either advocated or reflected violence against women, for example, there'd be a hell of a lot records that need banning (a lot of my fella's blues collection for a start!!!)

so yes, it bloody well is a toughy, and i've still not figured out what the hell think about it all!!

Part of the BNP's manifesto, or it certainly used to be, is to ban all forms of popular music. Maybe that's why white power music is so crap!

Funny (or unfunny) enough the so called Muslim extremists also believe in banning all types of popular music. It's no wonder that the BNP and the Muslim extremist group, whose name I have forgotten, have had "truces" in the past in areas like Whitechapel. They have more in common than they would like you to believe.
