What’s this all about then?

A few years ago Nottingham promoters Whycan'twejustallgetalong? decided to get all their friends’ bands to play a Christmas party. As there were a lot of them, and to make it a bit more interesting, they asked the bands to only play cover versions and to limit their sets to 2 or 3 songs. They christened it “The Christmas Covers Party”. Well, you would, wouldn’t you? There are no headliners - the music has a gradual gradient from 'less party earlier to more party later' – and the bands don't tell anyone what they are going to play. Over the years all sorts of red herrings have been planted to throw covers detectives off track. Every year someone suggests doing "Do they know it's Christmas Time?". No one has attempted it. Yet.

The night has always been in Nottingham, however this year is the first in London. This is because James has moved to London, he organises it and it's his favourite night of the year.

Some great bands have played in the past: The Wolves Of Greece, Sweetbriar, Seachange, Lords, Designer Babies, The Grips, Amusement Parks On Fire, Saint Joan, Punish The Atom, The Hellset Orchestra, and many more. This year will be no exception…

HUSH THE MANY
2 boys and 2 girls in London who met in 2004, operating in that fabled half lit world that exists between classically lined soft psychedelia and the stranger more enticing and timeless elements of English folk. In 2006 Hush the Many recorded sessions for Radio One’s Huw Stephens Show and The Selector Radio Show, toured/played with Ed Harcourt, Clayhill, Akron/Family, Vetiver, Cortney Tidwell, James Yorkston, Richard James, The Chap and perform at Bestival, Secret Garden, End of the Road, Big Green Gathering, Smallworld festivals... They are currently recording.
"This eloquent and earthly band make music to watch logs burn by, to spot the stars in the midnight sky by... Or, if you're not into that hippy sh**, just really, really, enjoy." Huw Stephens - BBC Radio One

THE GRAVE ARCHITECTS
Born with a broken heart "The Grave Architects" have picked themselves up, dusted themselves down and written their way to the top, garnering praise from the NME, plays on Radio Nottingham and a mention on the local council website along the way. Since forming in Nottingham (July 2005) "The Grave Architects" are now seasoned hands at the pulling heart strings out, stretching them once around the funny bone and plucking them to the wet crash of tiny tears. Think a hopped-up Jonathan Richman, or maybe The Rockingbirds, if anyone remembers them. Currently in the process of recording an LP at First Love (Nottingham's finest recording studio), early indications suggest that you may well throw away the rest of your records on the grounds that they are now 'worthless'.
“Nottingham’s own broken-hearted, The Grave Architects, haven’t even
played ten gigs yet in their short career as a band, but already
something special’s going on. (egigs.com)

THE CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT
With two albums to their name, this East Midlands quintet's music encompasses genres as diverse as prog-rock, folktronica and disco against a backdrop of lush, orchestral pop and a pinch of Pulp’s northern glamour.
'Strange, gargantuan rhythms, weird instrumentation and a singer who sounds like Kurt Wagner trapped beneath two feet of snow... as beautiful and crazy as The Arcade Fire' (NME)

GOLD SOUNDS
Gold Sounds have a long and illustrious history as Nottingham's 'most frequently re-named band'. Now living and working in London and with a name that points a subtle referential finger to their musical heroes Pavement, Gold Sounds have played alongside some of the great and gregarious; Editors, Simple Kid and indie heroes The Loft to name but a few.
"...when these four studious young believers get their heads down and give us a tune as delightful as 'Prints' - think David Gedge duetting with the Divine Comedy - they're a joy to behold..." Drowned In Sound

AFTER THE FOX
After The Fox mix up country, folk, americana, jangly Byrds-style guitars and folk violin to make a tempestuous brew of songs of love and loss.
6 piece shoegaze dark country folk walking the line between Beachwood Sparks, The Birthday Party and Slowdive with lashing of Terrence Trent Darby and a sprinkling of Minnie Driver.

GIT
Dirgy and dirty synth, bass drum, with looping guitar trickery provides the backdrop for early Nick Cave / The Fall railings. Complete with megaphone!
