OK, it's a cheeky gig plug but this promises to be a sparkly night at the Luminaire on Saturday 9th December, with sets from Santa Dog, First of the Giants, and the Tacticians and of course top choons from the DJs....
Santa Dog Imagine Blondie in a ruck with Throwing Muses on the edge of a cliff a with a stiff English breeze whipping up skirts and causing mischief and you're still nowhere near capturing Santa Dog’s distinctive sound and uniquely British charm. The band's global grassroots following has been assisted by airplay on BBC One Music, NPR, XFM Scotland, and Radio 1, along with recent supports to Misty's Big Adventure, Bromheads Jacket and the Organ. Current EP (Belle De Jour) entire first pressing sold out solely on on pre-orders.
FIRSTOFTHEGIANTS play epic, indie rock reminiscent of the soundscapes created by the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, British Sea Power and Joy Division but with a blistering early MSP’s energy. They are a passionate, committed live act though they shy away from bludgeoning an audience into submission. New EP ‘Obssessive Compulsive’ (released October 2006) beautifully captures the hook laden, majestic nature of their live set.
The Tacticians are an arresting hybrid of classic, English pop (comparisons with the Kinks have been drawn) and ‘urban’ folk. Recently championed by Vic McGlynn (6Music), the band sing of dangerous liaisons, failure, heartbreak, temptation and love in the big city. Joe Jnr and Ollie are the songwriters and in effect the core of the band. However live they are augmented by bassist Al, keyboardist Alex and mystery guest drummers. Tacticians songs are characterised by spare drumming, soulful riffing, lush harmonies and the occasional dusting of organ and glockenspiel.
