Probably watching Boy George perform for the first time and being absolutely transfixed by him - amazing stuff. It did lose it's way and for that reason I will not miss it. It became the embarrassing relative who you keep in the cupboard and dread bringing out for funerals and weddings :?

It seemed to lose its way through neglect more than anything... the Beeb made some awful decisions about it such as switching it to a Friday... what the FUCK was that all about? When I was growing up it was like Thursday - Top of the Pops day, the two were so synonymous with each other. It was curtains from that moment, the show was still going strong if you ask me...

I ain't buying this argument about 24-hour music channels either... there's 24-hour news/documentary channels and people still watch The 9 O'Clock News/Panorama and the like... Yeah it lost its currency and importance but who gives a fuck? Call me nostalgic but it was an institution... kind of went the same way as John Peel didn't it? The Beeb shoved it around and kinda forgot about it and then... it died. It's like the ol' One Man and His Dog scenario... BBC took it off the air because no fucker watched it, but then you got all said non-viewers writing into them saying, "Oi, where's One Man and His Dog gone?!". The point was not that they wanted to watch the bloody thing, but they just wanted it to be there...

Favourite moment? Chris Eubank doing the chart rundown, "And at 6, it's Cecila by Suggs"... Oh, and Belle and Sebastian doing Legal Man of course...

Fave moment was Nirvana doing that extremely dark version of Smells Like Teen Spirit; that must have scared the shit out of the Mums and dads

I reckon it was the decline of the singles chart that did it for them; its still based around the "Top 40" which no-one has taken any notice of for a at least a decade .. The singles chart collapsed well before downloading etc. came along; it was due mainly to record companies working out how to "buy" number ones (airplay weeks before release date etc.) and the whole thing became worthless ..

But why the beeb didn’t spot this 10 years ago, I’ve no idea. Even something as simple as basing it on the Album chart would have extended its shelf life somewhat

It would have been better had they just retorted "shut ya cunt ya fackin' coke 'ead, yer face looks like a long shoe." Or something like that.

Fat people are put on this earth by God to be mocked though.

oh right, I missed this thread.

My fav. moment and probably the reason I started a band was when the Manics played Faster on the show. Yes, it seems very silly now with the balaclavas and fire and war paint but I at the time I thought it was exciting and totally revolutionary. Apparently they hold the record for the most complaints.

I also thought Pulp doing Common People for a zillion times at no. 2 was pretty cool with those massive shopping trolleys.
