The return of the Odd Box Weekender. Back for our 3rd year we will have 18 bands (or thereabouts) over 2 days with guest DJs, Merch Stalls and more.

Venues are still to be confirmed - but we'll be running from 2pm-midnight each day. There might be a 'disco' on the Sunday night, too (and it's a bank holiday on the Monday, so no excuses for not staying out and throwing some drunken shapes!).

I can announce the first band today:

The Wednesday Club - http://thewednesdayclub.org/
The Wednesday Club began as a bedroom based recording project in 2004, expanding in 2007 to a full band. The product of 3 distinct singer/songwriters each bringing their own spin on indie-pop, but coming together through a shared love of the absurd. Often filtering bleak subject matter through catchy, concise pop songs and informed by a belief that clever and stupid are equally valid methods of expression.

In 2009 Odd Box released their 3rd LP 'Katapult'. They never got to tour that record and their live shows are as rare as hen's teeth. They will be playing 'Katapult' in it's entirety (we'll see if that pans out). We pressed 200 of these CDs and until recently it was thought to be sold out. But doing some Odd Box stock taking we found a box of 25. They will be on sale at the Weekender.

In 2011 the band returned with TWO related albums - Sour Crow and So Claw both released on Cath'n'Dad Records. 20 songs in total. Utterly compelling and they are available on a pay what you want basis from Cath'N'Dad Records bandcamp page.

The band are set to release their new album 'Passing Strange' again on Cath'N'Dad Records fairly soon. This band are one of those lost gems. The diamonds that glint in the dirt.

“joyful, absurd, spirit raising on a gloomy day” - Kitten Painting
"a treasure trove of great sounds" - Sounds XP
"Katapult' is a triumph" - Leeds Music Scene
"Ramshackle, yet lovely pop" - Russell's Reviews
"There’s something in here for even the coldest heart" - Fire Escape Talking

So I am chuffed to announce Big Joan as the 2nd act to be confirmed for the Weekender.

Big Joan - http://bigjoanmusic.wordpress.com/
The second band to be announced for the Odd Box Weekender are the Anglo German band - Big Joan who are currently based in Bristol.

The band were formed in 1999. Over the years they have released 2 EPs and 2 LPs. Their latest - 'The Long, Slow Death of Big Joan' is easily one of our favourite records of 2012.

"A visceral mangling of the rock format. Nasty, sexy and raw. 'The Long, Slow Death Of...' steamrollers you with brilliance" - The Joy Collective

Throat-punchingly, neuron-fuckingly alive.” - Venue Magazine

They rarely play shows in London and we're looking forward to welcoming them to the Odd Box Weekender and if the reports from their shows in Bristol are to be believed they are one of the best live bands in the UK at the moment. Exciting.

Three more announcements:

Flowers
http://flowersdomusic.bandcamp.com/album/oddities

We've confirmed the wonderful Flowers for the Weekender. Flowers formed in 2012. A three piece (Jordan, Rachel and Sam) making dreamy indiepop. They've already toured Europe with The Pains of Being Pure At Heart to a rapturous response. Rachel has one of those beautiful pop voices. To die for.

They first played for Odd Box back in September when they opened up for Tender Trap. That was, remarkably, only their 2nd ever live show. They're easily the best new 'indiepop' band we've heard in ages. The band have a 34 song demo called 'oddities' which collects their first recordings together. Proper releases are coming soon, we've been assured.

Ace Bushy Striptease. - (hardly a surprise this one).
http://acebushystriptease.bandcamp.com/

From Birmingham.

Absolutely chuffed to have Ace Bushy (Basith, Eve, Jeremy, Paul and Simon). playing the Weekender. They've released the best LP of 2012 (on Odd Box and Discount Horse). The will have a new EP on the Crackle! Fuzz! Pop! Singles Club in 2013. They are simply the best live band around at the moment.

They started five years ago as a distraction from the final year of university, they have grown up slightly over time from a wide-eyed mess into the semi-coherent, rough and tumble cuddlecore behemoth that is shambling round the country currently. The songs are brief, stubbornly avoid repetition and are a bit fancy-pants sloppy-ass pop-punk, all up in your face all of the time. Yeah.

ONSIND
http://onsind.tumblr.com/

One Night Stand in North Dakota is a punk band from Pity Me, Durham.

The duo (Nathan and Daniel) can also be found in pop punkers Martha when not playing as Onsind. But no matter, because Onsind are utterly brilliant. They have releases on Discount Horse and Plan-It-X. On stage the two vocals and two acoustic guitars sound as fierce as any bad-ass punk band. This band are for your heart. This band are beautiful.

"ONSIND delivers full-force folk-punk rants, campfire-ready and informative to boot... set aside the fact that [this] isn’t a pop record and one just might notice how honest and furious the thing sounds." - Jelone (Staff Reviewer), Punknews.org

New Band Announcement:

Wake The President - http://www.facebook.com/wakethepresident

From Glasgow.

The core of Wake the President is Bjorn and Erik Sandberg. Twin brothers from Glasgow who have been building a reputation as musicians and promoters for at least the last four years. Erik is the lyricist and main vocalist; Bjorn is the guitarist and focuses on things musical.

They clearly embrace the musical template of the ’80s Postcard records guitar pop, particularly Orange Juice, The Fire Engines and Josef K. But rather than look backward to make sure they paint within the lines, they stride forward on their own path.

I did some announcing:

Tigercats - http://tigercatsband.com/
Yay! We've just confirmed Tigercats for the Odd Box Weekender.

They've been away. They've been working on a new record. But we're delighted they're coming out to play for the Odd Box Weekender. 'Isle Of Dogs' their debut record (on Fika Recordings) was one of our favourites of last year and the bands East London roots oozes from the pores of out of the grooves of this fabulous record.

Dignan Porch - http://dignanporch.com/
Dignan Porch are signed to Captured Tracks (USA). They're from Tooting in South London. Dignan Porch are one of the best UK bands out there at the moment. They delve the mine of psychedelic pop to bring us gems like 'Picking Up Dust', 'On A Ride' and 'We Sat On A Hill'.

So we're thrilled that they're playing their first show for Odd Box in over a year. They always bring the house down

Yeah Yeah Noh - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Yeah-Yeah ... 2345453384
Playing their first London show this Century: Yeah Yeah Noh.

Utterly gobsmacked that they're up for making the Odd Box Weekender their first London show since their return in 2012. Their sound is a mix of whirling psyche and 80s indie. They're recording new material. They're bloody legends. They recorded 3 John Peel Sessions between 1984 and 1986. They're playing the Odd Box Weekender.
