'It doesn't matter the colour of the car
But what goes on beneath the bonnet
Is there a flag that flies above your heart
And is my name writ there upon it'
(A lover sings)

'I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care'
(New England)

'And wearing badges is not enough in days like these'
(Days like these)

'And the wasted seed of the bulldog breed
Is shouting here we go
What do they know of England? Only England knows(?)'
(The few)

'How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team?'
(Greetings to the new brunette)

'So drag me to the altar
And I'll make my sacrifice
Love is just a moment of giving
And marriage is when we admit our parents were right'
(The marriage)

'She married him and destroyed all my hopes
Of a two-up, two-down, two point five
and a dish on the roof
For the soaps'
(Mother of the bride)

'I closed my eyes and when I looked
Your name was in the memorial book
and what had become of all the things we planned?
I accepted the commiserations
Of all your friends and your relations
But there's some things I still don't understand'
(Tank park salute)

'If no one out there understands
Start your own revolution and cut out the middleman'

'So join the struggle while you may
The Revolution is just a T-shirt away
Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards'
(Waiting for the great leap forwards)

I'm currently of the belief that Stephin Merritt from The Magnetic Fields is the greatest lyricist alive. Here's a couple of reasons why:

"Don't fall in love with me yet
We only recently met
True I'm in love with you but
you might decide I'm a nut
Give me a week or two to
go absolutley cuckoo
then, when you see your error,
then, you can flee in terror
like everybody else does
I only tell you this cause
I'm easy to get rid of
but not if you fall in love
Know that I'm on the make
and if you make a mistake
my heart will certainly break
I'll have to jump in a lake
and all my friends will blame you
There's no telling what they'll do
It's only fair to tell you
I'm absolutely cuckoo"

"Now that you've made me want to die
You tell me that you're unboyfriendable
And I could make you pay and pay
But I could never make you stay"

He's definitely one of the best, I love his lyrics and bought 69 Love Songs on the strength of the lyrics I'd read, alone - wasn't too impressed when I eventually did, maybe I should give it another chance!

"I don't want to get over you.
I guess I could take a sleeping pill and sleep at will
And not have to go through what I go through.
I guess I should take Prozac, right?
And just smile all night at somebody new,
Somebody not too bright, but sweet and kind
Who would try to get you off my mind.

I could leave this agony behind
which is just what I'd do if I wanted to,
But I don't want to get over you, cause
I don't want to get over love.
I could listen to my therapist, pretend you don't exist
And not have to dream of what I dream of;

I could listen to all my friends and go out again and pretend it's enough,
Or I could make a career of being blue
I could dress in black and read Camus,
Smoke clove cigarettes and drink vermouth like I was 17
That would be a scream

But I don't want to get over you."

Beautiful :)
