The Exorcist isn't all that good, imo. Scarier than that, if demonic possession is your thing, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is bloody terrifying.

Good call on Repulsion though. Polanski's Rosemary's Baby is also good, and Audition is suitably disturbing.

I read today (in a free paper so who knows how true it is) that ambulances had been called to cinemas because people have been collapsing whilst watching SAW III because it's so gruesome. How about that?

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is quite simply spine chilling. The Exorcist was comical. Films that left a mark -

In the Company of Wolves
Silence of the Lambs
Omen (original)
Final Destination
Candy Man
The Descent
The people under the stairs (ahghghgh)
The house on the left (the most disturbing film ever made)

There's lots more. Everybody will have different ideas of what scary is - it's all subjective. It's a combination of experiences, beliefs and being able to relate to the characters.

some good suggestions though. i'm traditionally not very good with scary films. i get, quite franky, terrified and end up covering my eyes or turning them off (the film, not my eyes).

first time i saw the shining i thought it was great but not even remotely scary. as i've seen it more and more it's affected me more. the music, the suspense. brilliant. it's become one of my favourite films. saw the omen the other day and that was pretty cool too. great music. although not as good as the fantomas version of it. i scoffed at the blair witch when it came out but have since found that it did affect me quite a lot. got decidedly jumpy when staying in a scary looking cabin the woods in the darkest wilderness of the czech republic as a result. seen evil dead too and that was alternatley terrifying and hilarious. never seen texas chainsaw massacre and would like to. likewise never seen any of the romero zombie films. running zombies are well scary though, 28 days later anyone? i know it's not actually much of a horror, maybe it was just the london setting, but for a long time after that one when negotiating the desserted night time streets of stokie while stumbling stoned back from my mate's house i would find myself hearing god speed you black emperor start up on the soundtrack and find myself walking more quickly looking ofer my shoulder for "the infected"

I still love Carpenters version of The Thing. Seeing the blood testing scene when I was about 12 buggered me right up.
And you've got to hand it to him for the reet depressing ending and a refusal to have any screaming bints in it.
