It's a Squier version of a Fender Precision - made in the 70s or early
80s I was told, and a very
good specimin for a Squier (the varnish has worn off the neck back,
making it really easy to
play...)

It's black with white scratchplate...you know the one.

What's it worth? Few hundred?

A few hundred for a Squire?
I just got myself a proper Fender for that price the other week. 8)

So presumably the squire is like a happy shopper version, or something?
Sorry, I don't know much abaht all this stuff.
I guess from the smiley 'a few hundred' is overpriced, then?

I always thought that Squire's were cheap versions of Fender's. Usually made in the Far East somewhere. They had a few in the music shop where I picked up my Fender from. I think they were selling for around £160.

Yeah - Squire = cheap immitation of a Fender. And the fact that it's from the 70s or 80s actually doesn't help; they were very cheap and cheerful back then. They're actually rather better these days.

I'd say somewhere between £70-£100.

OK - ta. I think it's pretty good, actually. Sounds alreet to me!

So - just for interest - Fender didnae actually MAKE the Squier. Is that right?
It's just like an imitation, in no way endorsed or whatever by them?

they've varied a lot in quality over the years as have the entire fender range. they've changed specs constantly too. i still maintain that if you get a good 'un properly set up it can play as well as an expensive US model. obviously you don't get the quality woods and hardware (pots, switches, tuners, and better pickups etc) you get get with the more spenny stuff, but most of this is easily upgradeable and they can sound pretty good stock anyway.

i've got a US made tele up...or downgraded depending on your opinion, with a vintage style 3-saddle brass bridge, and although my £80 e-squier obviously can't compete in terms of build, wood, finish or hardware quality, it still plays great and with your eyes closed you'd have to really listening hard to tell them apart. the cheapo looks cool too. my point is in terms of value for money although i love the US and it is my main guitar - is it really worth ten times as much as the squier? i'd venture no.

the word on the street these days is that the mexican and japanese made stuff is pretty much a match for the US stuff in terms of build quality and hardware. which is pretty interesting as the US stuff is about double the price as rule of thumb.

the differing countries of origin do have slightly different hardware specs but the finished bodies are shipped from the same california factory before being assembled in mexico or wherever. so the main difference in price is labour rates. also the modern US models feature lots of modern "improvements" on the original designs such as extra switching, heavy chromed bridges that lot of people don't like (me included).

just saying like.

so chimes - you got a pic of the bass. i'm definitely interested.

Oh, I'd agree with most of that. For the money, Squire's are decent guitars. The benefits you get for the extra £500+ to buy a Fender are relatively small: better wood, better electronics, better tuning peg mechanism.

But that's today. I'm still not convinced it's always been that way - or, at least, I think if you're talking about "vintage" Squires a lot depends on where they were made and when.
