October 4th 2006 is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. This was one of the most significant events in 1930s Britain, when Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts were turned back as they attempted to march through the East End. The illusions of power and supremacy that Mosley had cultivated were stripped away forever.
To mark this anniversary there are a few events taking place in East London - see details below.
Wednesday 4th October: 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Cable Street (in association with the Jewish Museum). Walk led by Clive Bettington. Departs 5pm from Tower Hill tube. This walk from, Tower Hill to Gardiners Corner looks at one of the most significant political events in the history of the East End, examining in detail the major events of the battle. Tickets £4. Wednesday 4th October: Seminar on the Battle of Cable Street. Toynbee Hall, Commercial Street (closest tube Aldgate East; 7pm. Chaired by Prof Bill Fishman and featuring talks by Sir Nicholas Mosley, who will be discussing his father’s career, and Prof David Cesarani, who will talk on the Myths and Realities of Cable Street. Saturday 7th October: ANTIFA gig at Chats Palace, Hackney. Confimed bands Inner Terrestrials, PAIN, Bottlejob plus several others tbc. The gig will run from 5pm until 1am . Entry £6.
