RIP Joseph Hill, frontman of Culture. People of a certain age will remember John Peel championing them, back in the day when reggae was really edgy and inventive. |

Personally I think reggae took a wrong turning after Skaville, that was much more fun... I wouldn't go as far as to say something as daft as "all reggae is vile" but inventive? I remember sitting through those ten minute long Misty in Roots tracks on Peelie at the turn of the 70s and thinking "Christ on a bike, will this repetive unimaginative drivel never finish!". Plus of course he could have played about 7 Notsensibles tracks in the time they took... ![]() |

I've just got Andy Smith's mix cd of the Trojan back catalogue and rather good stuff it is too. |

been listening to King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown recently. It's very inventive. Very influential as well - and not just for other raggae musicians. The sense of space dub creates, and the way it focuses on drums and bass with other sounds just floating in and out - both have played a huge role in post-70s pop. BTW, I think SoundsXP should start a "Jail Ben Thatcher" campaign. It could link with a sister campaign: "Jail Paul Dickov"; Paul hasn't done anything illegal, but he's an annoying little twat and seeing him in the Big House would cheer us all up, I think. |
