Apparently this London venue is being demolished to make way for flats, shops, etc. There's a petition here: Not a fan of the venue but it's better than a lot of other larger ones. |

I've signed it - that place has given me some happy memories. Apart from the one where my sister broke her foot in three places. They did not handle it well and literally 'swept' her out off the building with their brooms - they were cleaning up the place for G.A.Y.E - the medic said that she had twisted her ankle. I could see his face at 5 in the morning in casualty. I punched it several times. Ah, the memories... |

From what I've read about all this the dear old Astoria is being attacked on two fronts - firstly when the current license expires in 2008 - which is when the nasty property developers are wanting to step in with their bulldozers and secondly with this rail link proposal. Bastards - the lot of em. Not sure if all this is demolition / property proposal stuff is being exagerrated somewhat to pre-empt the developers but fuck it, why not. It's one of my fave venues and it'll be massively shitty to have a designer-of-the-month's monstrosity in its place. |

I haven't been there for ages but I did like the fact that if you're going to have to go to a big venue at least at that one you could stand right at the front of the balcony and get your beer pretty swiftly from the bar at the back. The downstairs was just horrible. Mind you LA2 (now Mean Fiddler) was even weirder with that odd raised platform on the standing area. |

It's not as if there are no other London venues, it all depends on what they are going to do with the place I guess. But no music venue that has a million pound a year rent fee is ever going to be a site for up and comers. |
