I've never trusted the other 'would-be Peels' that were around in the 80s. The likes of David Jensen, Andy Kershaw, Mark Goodier, Janice Long etc...
None of them 'meant it' the way Peel did.

And, I've just heard Liz Kershaw talking about an upcoming tribute to Ivor Cutler on 6music, where she uttered the words 'Ooh, I LOVE Ivor...'.
Struck me it might have been better to say 'I loved'...whatever.

Then, after the next record, she came on air to announce that she wasn't aware he had died last week. But - and this is the bit that got my hairy goat - she went on to say something like "I'm going to go home and play his album - which is called 'Life In A Scotch Sitting Room' - which is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT'...."

Just another bullshitter, like so many in the 'indie' field. You know they would prefer 'rawk', but are scared stiff by the reverse snobbery, which, in a way, I'm guilty of displaying here.

i saw that last night. was too tired to drag my arse off the sofa to avoid it. always hated that show. the comedy was always so forced, hatefull and well... unfunny. the formula was so strictly adhered to every week that it was also entirely predictable. right down to the questions: round one, look at a video and try to make up funny things to say about it. round two: hum a song at your team while mark lamarr interrupts with the same unfunny outburst that he will deploy for the duration of the show safe in the knowledge that repetition is a kind of substitute for actual comedy. pause to bully and humiliate the 15 year old boyband member on phil's team. there then follows the "humiliate a line-up of bewildered members of the public and one failed one-hit wonder who has been lured into the studio with a promise of a mention for their latest pathetic attempt the ressurrect a career that never really existed in the first place round". finish it off with the neither funny, or interesting next words round that will include one song by each musical guest who will (hillariously!) not know the words to their own song and one reference to some lame arse joke that occured earlier in the show (how clever!). edit heavily (so "phils team needing 11 points to win" manage to draw by answering two questions. makes you wonder how hopelessly unfunny were the bits they cut out) then go to venomous and bitter closing remarks by lamar and roll credits.

at least ross brought a bit of good natured and self-depricating humour to it. it was never really about the music was it? either way it's still a shit show. "buddy buddy" comedy game shows can all fuck off if you ask me.

But, getting back to the main point of this thread, you must remember that Peel was a happy accident. The BBC always considered him a mix of village idiot and team mascot and were amazed to find themselves with a latter-day saint on their hands.

The huge advantage he had over 90% of DJs was that he was allowed to play whatever records he wanted. Most jocks simply do not have that luxury - they're hired not because of their passion for music but because they can chat inanely between songs chosen by company executives. Of course, they have to pretend to like the stuff they're playing because a radio station's reputation depends on its ability to influence the music-buying public. Hence the key competencies for the vast majority of DJs are: a) being a charlatan and b) liking (nay, adoring) the sound of his/her own voice.

And the more the Beeb "bigged up" Peel after his death, the more you could hear BBC executives saying "we won't be making that mistake again."

They did manage to play The Buff Medways during the day at least once.

But their afternoon show was actually not much different from Nicky Campbell, who they replaceed. It had pretty much the same phone-in features with slightly different names, and they couldn't deviate from the official playlist much (even though they could subtly take the piss out of the records they were made to play).
