I buy from independent (select-a-disc, rough trade), online (e-music, bleep, audio lunchbox, allofmp3) and second hand (Flashback). Most these days are purchased via my online subscriptions. has had stuff on it for months that has finally got a UK release. It's all independent labels too. |

i'm very lazy. and although that means i support my local cornershop (it's nearer than sainsburies) if i'm totally honest as i have to pass borders and hmv to get to my nearest indie (since reckless closed). so i'd have to say that i get my records like this (in order of frequency visited): 1) sale section of full price. great for stocking up on "i SHOULD own that" stuff that you just would not pay full price for or pick up in an indie over something interesting and new. the problem being that there's always a billion of these historical essentials that you need so i always pick up 5 for £30 or whatever and then get 2 full price things at £13 each while i'm there... oh and a box-set and before you know it you've spent over £60. shit. 2) little chains (fopp, disque etc.) great selection and cheap. wicked. 3) second-hand (flashback etc) and charity shops. and probably lastly in terms of times visited although i do tend to spunk a fortune when i do: 4) independants (rough trade etc) i rarely buy online as in addition to being lazy i have no patience. it's not cool, but it's true. |

Seriously, though, the rapid growth of music downloading looks set to ask some interesting questions of the pop biz over the next few years. For some time now the top 40 has been a sort of de facto specialist chart detailing the musical tastes of 10-14 year olds (ie, the only people who regularly buy CD singles). But once we're all tooled up with iPods or Sony Walkmans (hell, even I've got one) and broadband connections, this could change. What effect would this have on bricks and mortar music outlets? What effect would this have on indie charts? Will it increase or decrease the range of music easily available? (Does it cost more or less to keep copies of that obscure 60s classic online - or, indeed, last year's forgotten hit-that-never-was?) |
