Ok we all have our personal faves but realistically who are the greatest band of all time ie the one who can genuinely claim to have influenced more and produced great tunes over a period of time. I've excluded anything post 1990 as Nirvana, Radiohead, etc won't really be measurable until the next generation comes along and judges them for their true long term worth.

It's a close call between the Beatles and the Stones but for me the Beatles only had 5 years where they produced great tunes I still want to listen to whilst the Stones had about 13 years.

New Order because they are more relevant to me than any of the other bands on the list.

But with the choices on offer it would have to be The Clash for various reasons.

VU, because it's said their first album sold in very low quantities but everyone who bought it formed a band. And they're still recognisibly influential today on the sort of music we like. But I could have voted for half of these bands really.

I went with Velvet Underground... I bought the Nico album and am also now forming a band. Same with Big Star, who are similarly influential. They are possibly the best band of all time (though my personal favourite is still REM)

go with the musical influence rather than the lifestyle otherwise you'll be drunk, dead, drugged or a drummer. Or you'll have bad habits like pissing in the sink (if you're a lay-dee). And that's before we get into the cosmic f**k-ups who were Big Star (another favourite band of mine).

Very strange no-one mentioned the Cure as an influence....

Are you referring to me, Johnny?

I love the Cure - I'm very influenced by 'Boys Don't Cry' era and 'Head On The Door' era Cure, but I'm more influenced at the moment by Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, YYY, Big Star, Cat Power, Burning Brides, Sonic Youth, The Kills, The Von Bondies... worryingly, mostly female-fronted blues-punk.

Queen by some distance. I only put them on the list for a laugh to see if anyone would be so daft as to vote for them.

I felt obliged to vote for VU, just for sheer constitency (if you ignore Squeeze, which doesn't really count). Plus the bands that are influenced by them tend to be better than the ones that are influenced by some of the other ones on your list.
