Listening to the Blue Mink's Melting Pot today I realised how a song written with the best intentions sounds racist these days. The lines I refer to are: "Take a pinch of white man Wrap him up in black skin Add a touch of blue blood And a little bitty bit of red Indian boy Oh like a Curly Latin kinkies Oh Lordy, Lordy, mixed with yellow Chinkees, yeah You know you lump it all together" Unsurprisingly Boyzone changed the lyrics when they released a version. Anyone think of any other lyrics that sound un-PC these days? |

How about "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones? It's one of those songs where I never really paid much attention to the lyrics until I saw someone do it on the Karaoke..... Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields, Sold in a market down in new orleans. Scarred old slaver know he’s doin’ alright. Hear him whip the women just around midnight. Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good (a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should A-huh. Drums beating, cold english blood runs hot, Lady of the house wond’rin where it’s gonna stop. House boy knows that he’s doin’ alright. You should a heard him just around midnight. Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good (a-ha) brown sugar, just like a black girl should A-huh. I bet your mama was a tent show queen, and all her boy Friends were sweet sixteen. I’m no schoolboy but I know what I like, You should have heard me just around midnight. Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good (a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should. I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said Oh just like a, just like a black girl should. I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said Oh just like, just like a black girl should. |

I always thought Lou Reed's 'And the coloured girls go doo do doo do doo' was a little bit dubious. Strange though how 'coloured' seems to be everyone's choice of description as opposed to black, even though it's a little bit rude with even the best of intentions. |

Bob Dylan: "I've got myself a brown-skinned girl, but I love her just the same", or something like that. Hmmm. |
