am currently reading a book about the wigan casino, and while it's not the best written book it really does capture a sense of the excitement that must have existed on that whole scene. while i'm no afficianado (hell i can't even spell it!) on northern soul music, i do like it, and would fucking love to have been old enough to go the original all-nighters. as there's many an old bastardo on here, i thought i ask - did anyone here ever go? apparently the 100 club still do them every now and then, but they don't start till 2am. zoikes!! i'm normally struggling to keep my peepers open by then. also, can anyone do any of the mad northern soul dancing? while i'm not bad on the dancefloor, i'm buggered if i can do the basic shuffle let alone any of the acrobatic stuff. but if anyone knows how to do it, i'd pay for lessons! soundxp northern soul dance-off anyone? |

Pip's right about it being cliquey. I think it's always been a scene based on how many all-nighters you've been to, which rare records you've heard and in the case of the DJs, finding those rarities first. They used to mask the labels of their favourites to stop other DJs from discovering what that fantastic tune was they were spinning. As the whole scene's built around the obscurity of the music (95% of it had original pressings of a few hundred at the very most) it's not surprising but it's a shame if any of it to this day stops people discovering the fantastic music. Luckily there are hundreds of comps now on Kent, Goldmine, etc you can pick up - I have over 100 CDs myself but don't own a single 7" NS record. |

can't really do a top ten as i'm still very new to it all (only have a couple of comps) but two tunes i absolutely love are 'better use your head' by little anthony and the imperials and '25 miles' by edwin star. fabulous! oh god, and how could i forget frank wilson's 'do i love you'. ![]() |
