Eh? Where's the choice in that? The best decade was obviously the 1930s. It's where it all sprung from - Robert Johnson died, having inspired many blues singers and leaving a blueprint for all the blues-based bands of the 60s and 70s (Stones, Clapton, Zepp), Bessie Smith was the original Janis Joplin/Courtney Love/ PJ Harvey, the big 50,000 watt country music stations were blasting their country and western swing across swathes of the southern USA, laying the groundwork for Sun Records and Elvis A Presley, there was gypsy jazz from Django Reinhard and crooning from Al Bowly. Bing Crosby was king! Yeah, that was the coolest decade daddi-o.

Failing that, I'll take the 1720s...

The 6o's in terms of sheer breadth of variety. From Merseybeat and Motown through to Psychedelia and the Underground, the roots of everything we have today are in that decade. Music went from black and white to technicolour pop art etc etc

I you had been born in Manchester around the time the Smiths were going, you'd have been a bit young to appreciate them I suspect!

I'm with humour 2020 (except that I voted). My favourite music comes from the much-maligned 1980s with a few exceptions (and they are largely from the latter part of the 70s). Because of post-punk, Postcard Records of Scotland, the new romantics, The Smiths, Ron Johnson, 53rd & 3rd, C86, and many other wonderful things besides. And mainly because that's when I was a teenager.

Sigh, it has to be the '60s, I suppose. But I'm not very happy about it.

Can't we all put our heads together and come up with some good music to finally shut up those bastard baby-boomers?

Anyway, it was easier back then - you only had to fart on record to do something original. "Oooh! Feedback! No-one's done that before! Wow! Lyrics about current affairs! What will they think of next?"

Plus, it was easier to be in a band back then coz the Government pretty much demanded young people spent several years on the dole (£600 per week at current prices) before reluctantly agreeing to let them do some work. Then "the kids" went and ruined it all by forming Emerson Lake & Palmer; Ted Heath had an immediate change of heart and told OPEC to hike up oil prices. A golden age came crashing to a close.
