Re: Rulers of the Planet gig – Whelans, Dublin 16/5/05 Lauren, the word humility may indeed mean very little to the Rulers of the Planet, but I get the feeling that a sense of humour means very little to you. The thing is, I have never seen a more tongue in cheek display of egomania in my life! While the crowd was disappointing, I have to say, that was one rockin’ gig and I for one had a smile on my face throughout. As I may add, did those around me. (Granted, a few seemed a little scared at the start…) While I think of it, you would think that an aspiring / professional journalist take the time to at least research the name of the front man of the band you were going to review (Meeeow!). His name is in fact Barry McAuliffe (not McGough) and I thought he was the most entertaining front man I’d seen in ages. His Jesus pose with his poxy boxers was hilarious! Believe me, no self-respecting megalomaniac would ever attempt world domination with their boxers on display. (Did Sadam look like he would or could take over the world on the Sun last week?) The Rulers of the Planet blend the Clash, the Sex Pistols, Pixies & countless other fantastic bands from the 70s on and yet their sound is totally original. The gig was 100% adrenalin and “In 30 minutes we take over the Earth” is just brilliant! I realise that by now this sounds like a party political broadcast on behalf of the Rulers of the Planet, but you drove me to it! Only a girl could complain that she was distracted from the music by a bloke that looked like Buzz Lightyear (& strangely he does). Of course, if the Rulers of the Planet have Buzz Lightyear among their ranks, are they not setting their sights too low? Instead of aspiring to be merely Rulers of the Planet, should they not instead be aiming for… “infinity and beyond?” |

Hooray, a literate and reasonable critic! I have no idea whether anything you say is right, but top marks for avoiding the "you're all cunts" approach. That dress code must be working Bovine. |

Oh and by the way - none of us are professional and I doubt many of us are aspiring. For future reference, if any band wants me to get their names right they can wear name badges (large print please). |

I'm pissed off by the 'only a girl' comment - this post is obviously by Barry You got my second name wrong. Still, well written even if it is a tantrum in the guise of a political broadcast. Why can't people accept that the whole world cannot love them?

For what it's worth, I thought Rulers were quite entertaining but a one-joke outfit who have just about outlived their usefulness. They look like civil servants who formed a wacky band for an office party; fun while you're there but in you're heart you know you'll never go to see them on purpose again. I'm all for a bit of fun in music, God knows Irish music has been starved of it long enough, but clowning does not equal wit or longevity. Mind you, there's no arguing with Corkonians about their sense of humour, is there, Moham? That record The Langer was a rib-tickler, wasn't it? |

Come on Neon/Lauren, you must admit, the bass players looks shouldn't have anything to do with whether or not the band kick ass, or suck the big one (like a girl at a gig )
Fair enough, if you don’t like them, you don’t like them, but it shouldn’t be about looks. Not every band can have “Marshall Stars Hair” you know… & what if their bass player looked like Buzz Lightyear, or if their singer showed you his boxers? Would you slag them off as well??? On The Marshal Stars, by the way we agree… They are fantastic! Their talent and their haircuts will take them far. On the night, who entertained me more? – Without doubt – The Rulers of the Planet. Aside from haircuts the Marshall Stars have great songs, voices, musical ability and a fair deal of stage presence. Rulers have all those things too (although Ed/Buzz seems to be the only one who doesn’t cut his own hair), but where they part from The Marshal Stars is stage presence. Whether you like him or not, Barry (the singer) has it in bucket loads, Buzz Lightyear’s certainly got it, Mick the guitarist’s got it. – He’s like “Mick-a Wallis” in “the Commitments” – “he’s a savage, but he’s our savage” (although in this case replace the words “savage” with “spacer”). Even the Mullet on drums has character...Seeing as were talking about look-alikes - He a looks a bit like Shane Byrne, the Ireland Hooker (that’s rugby love ).
The point is there not three matching haircuts with instruments & microphones. They are band in the old sense of the word – a group of individuals doing something together. Whether they rule the planet or not, this is a very good & unique band. They are far from “uninventive”. They are a fusion of obvious influences, yet they are still without doubt unique. And why shouldn’t he say they got 9 out of 10 from Hot Press? Fair fucks to them! They should be proud of their reviews… They’re bloody good” As for the “only a girl” thing…. For fuck sake chill out! The Marshall Stars will never shag ya if your that up tight!!!!!!!
