Mute Film presents…

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN – THROBBING GRISTLE – DIAMANDA GALAS – BALANESCU QUARTET

After the success of last year’s first MUTE FILM night at the Ritzy comes the second instalment with videos and rare and unseen footage from another range of ground-breaking artists from the Mute stable

Ritzy Cinema, SW2

Sat 19 Feb 2005
11.30pm £5.50

Einsturzende Neubauten – (videos)

“In that sense, Neubauten, though increasingly melodic and thus more accessible than in their Drawings of Patient O.T. days, still presents a major
threat to our stale cultural paradigms. They croon like twisted balladeers from the Theatre of Cruelty, and they (still) pack the wallop of a wrecking ball.
A softer sound makes them all the more subversive then, allowing them (one hopes) to stealthily pervade our system, all the while planting incendiaries
that they will detonate when we have been drawn furthest into the building. With their constant effort to include the audience in their endeavor (note the
inclusive "we" that emerges on several tracks; contrast it with the exclusive "I" and "me" of most American contemporary pop music), they plant the
volatile seeds of a remarkably subtle cultural conspiracy. Neubuten relentlessly nudges music toward the future.”

Throbbing Gristle (rarely / previously unseen footage)

In the second half of the 1970s, Throbbing Gristle waged war on British society. With songs about the
Moors murders and the Manson killings, and riotous concerts that garnered front-page headlines and
sparked debates in the House of Commons, the band did, as guitarist Cosey Fanni Tutti puts it, "disrupt
things a little". The MP Nicholas Fairbairn called them wreckers of civilisation - shortly before he
was arrested for indecent exposure.

Balanescu Quartet (videos)

"The string quartet has been unchanged for 200 years or so," considers Alexander Balanescu, "but the
format seems to be infinitely flexible." Having worked with Michael Nyman, The Pet Shop Boys, John
Lurie and Kate Bush, Balanescu has made it his business to utilise that flexibility and apply the
ingenuity of The Balanescu Quartet to explore uncharted territories. "We were looking for a new
generation of composers, and we could not find them! So we said to ourselves, 'Why should we be
restricted to what is called serious classical music?"

Diamanda Galas (rare footage)

“She plays the piano like driving rain slapping on concrete, and she sings like a demon going to war, a valkyrie scatting, a
lizard queen seeking revenge for the dead...Galas is profound, rigorous, vocally unlimited, terrifying and utterly compelling.
To hear her is to have your soul scoured clean.” - THE AGE AUSTRALIA
